Terrell Spring Football

High School football is a big deal in Texas. Right now team are having their spring practices and scrimmages. Last night the Terrell Tigers held their spring game. This is a chance to get an idea of what the team will look like in the fall. It gives coaches a chance to try new things and put the year before to rest. It gives the fans a look at who the new star will be. It is more of a controlled scrimmage than a game, but it was fun to watch. Today's picture is the players getting final instructions before the game began.

My reflection

Earlier this month I posted a reflection shot of the main drag through Terrell. At the same time I took that picture, I took this one. If you look closely in the reflection you can see D O R K written on my forehead. This is the shot I am now using for my profile picture. I think it looks a little better than the old picture.

HOT HOT HOT

Forecast for the next week, temperatures between 95-98 degrees. Looks like summer has already started, and these guys are ready to enjoy it. This was taken in Rockwall, Texas on Lake Ray Hubbard.

old fire escape

A lot of old movies have people being chased down fire escape, climbing a fire escape to meet a lover or sitting out on a fire escape to get away from the summer heat. I wonder how many times this fire escape has been used? It looks pretty old. I wonder if its original? Today's photo is the back of Hard Bodies Gym.

Yesterday picture was not from my yard. Its in the large front yard of a house in the neighborhood.

Kaufman County Memorial Day observance

Monday morning a Memorial Day observance was held at the Kaufman County Veterans Park in Kaufman, Texas. The program featured guest speaker former POW Navy Comm. (Ret.) Charles Stackhouse, the laying of a wreath, a rifle team and the playing of taps.

Below is the crowd gathering before the start of the program.

A few more pictures can be found at More Terrell Texas.

Midway advances

Waco Midway beat Forney yesterday to advance in the Class 4A State baseball playoffs. Here is another picture from Friday nights game in Forney. The spot I was at on the third base line was between the wall and the pitchers warm up area.

The above pic kind of reminds me of the old type baseball cards.

The bottom pic lets you see just how close we were to the warmup area. Looks like he was going to throw it to me.

More pictures are posted at my flickr page. Follow the link on the right sidebar.

For a different type of baseball story please read Cliff Gibsons post on his site.

Waco Midway vs. Forney Jackrabbits

I made a short trip to Forney last night to watch the second game of the Class 4A Regional Semifinal between Waco Midway and Forney Jackrabbits. Midway won the first game Thursday night. Forney came through with a big 4th inning and won Friday nights game 10-7. The deciding game will be Saturday in Duncanville, TX.

This is the Forney starting pitcher warming up before the game. I dont think he was healthly going into the game. He only last a few batters before being replaced. He stayed in the game, playing shortstop and 2nd base coming through twice with clutch hits. More photos to come.

I posted a clip on you tube from the bottom of the 4th inning. The clip is the tying and go ahead run scoring.

Lunch at Boomerjacks

Ok, everyone assumed that I would have a drink or beer. Crittoria and Rachel remembered I said I didnt drink. If you haven't been to their sites, check them out, they have some great pictures. So, sorry to let everyone down, but below is what I ordered, nothing fancy, but sooooooo goooooood. Boomerjacks is in a strip center near Wal-Mart in Terrell. Everything they

Blue cheese burger with crumbled bacon, seasoned fries, side of ranch and a diet coke. No jager or jello shots or beer. Told ya I am a nerd.

Hoss Man

This guy was directing traffic at the Run for the Wall stop in Terrell. I think the name on the back of his vest said Hoss Man. If I am wrong I apologize. Riders stopped in Terrell for fuel, a bite to eat and to pick up more riders. This guy looked like he was having a great time. Check out my you tube clips of him doing his directing.

Run for the Wall 2008, Terrell, Texas

Sunday morning Terrell was a a fuel stop for the Southern Route for Run for the Wall XX. It was quite impressive to see so many motorcycles and veterans rolling through. More information about the Southern Route can be found here.

The mission statement for RFTW is:

Goals:

1. To guide the participants across America.
2. To educate future generations as to the importance of accountability in wartime actions emphasizing that no one should be left behind.
3. To participate in Rolling Thunder in support of their demand for government accountability for POW/MIA's.

It is very hard to find one picture to get describe the morning.

Below is a clip of the riders heading out from Terrell to the next stop Longview, TX.

Relay for Life 2008 Terrell/Kaufman County

I am posting late today for a good reason. Tonight the track and infield at Herman Furlough Middle School is host to Relay for Life 2008 of Terrell/Kaufman County.

This is how the Relay of Life is described on the Terrell Chamber of Commerce website.

This overnight fundraiser for cancer research honors cancer survivors and caregivers and remembers those who succumbed to the disease. The event includes on-site fundraising activities sponsored by relay teams, who don't mind adding a little humor to a serious cause.

More information about the Relay for Life can be found here.

Bliss Hair Studio has a team raising money for the fight against cancer. There was at least one person donating more than cash. Follow the pictures below.

See that braid draped over her shoulder?

Just a little more......

All gone. This lady just donated 21" of hair. Awesome.

Pecan Place, Terrell, Tx

A few months ago I posted a picture of old stables. It is actually and old carriage house. The owner of the carriage and the main Victorian house left a comment about that picture.

I own this carriage house. The carriage house was built in 1897 - the same year as the three story Victorian home that sits on the same 1 acre property. Sure wish you would take a pic of the house too. It's a fabulous 3 story with a full basement. Everything has been renovated - all new wiring, insulation, new plumbing, central air and heat. We are motivated sellers. The house and property appraised at $500,000 in 2006 and we have it listed for $390,000 due to the depressed housing market. This house has lots of documented history. The original owner only lived in it 2 years when his young wife died and he sold it to M.A. Joy who lived there for 50 years. There have only been 5 owners so all the original woodwork, hardware and glass are in tact. The 1876 reed organ brought up by a team of mules from Tyler Texas is still in the ballroom. The carriage house housed the first fire truck for Terrell - it was the only place big enough for it. The carriage house has a dirt floor and is two stories. It has stalls for horses and rooms upstairs that used to be for the servants. With all the work that we have had to do on the home, we just haven't had the time or the money to spend on the carriage house. It looks run down from the outside, but it is in pretty good shape. Not sure if you would want it for a house since it has a dirt floor but with many $$$$$, I'm sure that could be replaced.

I have been meaning to get over there and get a few good pictures of the house and grounds. I just havent been able to find time. Todays picture is the front of the house. There is so much more to see than just the front, you can find specifics here.

OK, maybe not mums, but Happy 60th Birthday Mom.

This Saturday, May 17th, the Windmill Farms Community Watch is sponsoring a Family Safety Fair from 2-4PM. This event, which all of Forney, Terrell and the surrounding areas are invited to attend, will feature booths, information, games and characters from over 25 different organizations, including the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office, the North Texas Poison Center, the Kaufman County Master Gardener, the YMCA and the Department of Public Safety (see below for complete list).

Kids will have an opportunity to meet McGruff the crime dog, Smokey Bear, Vince & Larry (the crash test dummies), Sparky the fire dog and the Chick Fil A cow! In addition, the Sheriff’s Office plans to bring several police cars as well as K-9 units, the Forney Volunteer Fire Department will be bringing a fire truck and the local ambulance service will have an ambulance – all for the kids to tour.

In addition to information and brochures about various safety related topics, free child identification kits, sponsored by Capital One, will be available. There will be a bounce house for the kids and the first 250 children to attend will be able to participate in the Safety Scavenger Hunt to win prizes sponsored by T-Mobile. Additionally, other prizes, including free passes to the Forney Starplex movie theater will be given away to adults who register at the event.

The Family Safety Fair will be held at the Spyglass park area in Windmill Farms, near the intersection of Iron Gate Blvd & Reeder in Windmill Farms. From Highway 80, exit Windmill Farms Blvd, which is just east of Forney; follow Windmill Farms Blvd into the community to Reeder at which point you will make a left turn. After passing Forney Middle School at Windmill Farms Blvd & Reeder, the Spyglass park area will be on your left before you reach Iron Gate Blvd.

Singing Man BBQ will be on hand selling barbecue and providing live entertainment and the Windmill Farms Community Watch will have a concession stand with hot dogs, nachos and more – the proceeds from the concession stand will support Community Watch efforts in Windmill Farms.

Visit the Windmill Farms Community Watch website at WFWatch.com for more details.

Last of the Sugar Rush 5K Run

My finish line photos didn't come out as good as I would have liked. The top photo is the overall winner crossing the finish line.

Below is the first lady to cross the finish. I think she was maybe 5th overall.

Follow this link for more pictures of the start and finish of the race. Next year the race will be held during the Heritage Jubilee.

Koffee Kake that I showed back in February is Debbies shop. If you are in town stop by and get a coffee and something sweet. My favorite is a mandarin glaze muffin.

Mayor Richards runs the Sugar Rush 5K

One of the sponsors of the Sugar Rush 5K was the City of Terrell. One of the participants in the race was Terrell Mayor Hal Richards.

Mayor Richards posed for photos with Debbie before the start of the race.

Was all smiles at the start of the race.

Crossing the finish line and ready to run another 5K........but maybe not today.

Way to go.

Tiffany Orshalick and Debbie Weiss

The Sugar Rush 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run held Saturday in Terrell was to benefit the Deborah Kay Foundation for colon cancer research. All proceeds were going to be donated to the National Cancer Institute to provide colon cancer research and awareness. To read more about the Foundation visit their website from the link on the sidebar.

Todays picture is of Tiffany Orshalick and her Mother Debbie Weiss. Tiffany created the Deborah Kay Foundation as a way to honor her mother, who is a colon cancer survivor. Tiffany did an excellent job organizing the race and appropriate it was held on Mothers Day weekend.

Deborah Kay's Sugar Rush 5K Race, Terrell, Texas

Saturday morning Ben Gill Park in Terrell played host to the Sugar Rush 5K Race and 1 Mile Fun Run. It was a great turnout, I would guess about a 100 runners and walkers, it was for a great cause and it looked like everyone had a great time. I will be posting more pictures of the race of the next few days.

The Smart Car

I heard the rumors, but I didn’t believe them. They said in Europe that they named a car after me. No way, I thought. But then, I saw it. The car named after me, the Smart Car.

I was able to get this picture of the Smart car on I-30 in Rockwall. I apologize for not getting the entire car in the frame. It was rush hour, I was driving about 70mph, talking on the phone, drinking a soda, eating a candy bar, texting my BFF and smoking a cigarette. But I think I did pretty good, huh?

OK, it’s a joke. I don’t smoke.

OK, I was the passenger.

Dallas Stars

No picture for today, instead you get the Dallas Stars. They played the San Jose Sharks last night in game 6 of the second round of the NHL playoffs. Dallas was up 3-2 win last night and go to the conference finals to face the hated Detroit Redwings.
I am not really into watching hockey on TV, but since the Mavericks are out and Nascar was on Saturday night, I thought I would check out the hockey game.
I think it was one of the best games I have seen in some time. Dallas won, it took 4 overtimes to do it. They played a total of 2 hours 9 minutes and 3 seconds. The game started at 8pm local time and ended just before 1:30am. I can only imagine how the players feel. I am going to be dragging butt today.

R. L. Warren House, Terrell, Texas

Terrell has quite a few magnificent historic homes. The house below is R. L. Warren house. The house has been empty for at least the last 11 years. There has been a lot of work done on the house in that time. There was a sign out front quite a few years ago that announced the house would be turned into a restaurant. Not sure what, if any, plans the owners have for it now.

Below is the text from the Historical Marker on the property.

The R. L. Warren House
Unusual mansion built in 1904 by prominent residents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lee Warren. Architect was J. E. Flanders, Dallas; Keith & Co., Kansas City, Stencilled interiors. House has 18 rooms, including a formal reception hall, two large drawing rooms, a conservatory; ten fireplaces; a basement and attic. Hey bud

I normally don't post flower photos, because I cant catch them just right, and most of my flowers look like they came from the discount bin. I guess I don't have a green thumb. I did find a nice rose that was just about to bloom that I thought looked nice. Of course its not from my yard.

Its going to be in the mid 70s today, so off to do something outside. Have a great Saturday!

Terrell's daily newspaper

Terrell is located about 30 miles east of Dallas and it’s the largest town in Kaufman County. The North Central Texas Council of Governments estimates the January 1, 2007 population of Terrell as 15,750. One of the nice things about living in Terrell is we have our own daily newspaper, The Terrell Tribune. They have a print version and an online version. Not bad for a small town. I usually check out the main stories online, then purchase the paper on the way home from work. Do you live in a small town with a daily newspaper? Be sure to check out the link on the sidebar. The sports editor for the Tribune has a blog that was voted 2007's Best Blog by Texas Associated Press Managing Editors. He has his pick for the NBA championship posted now.
