Sirens, warnings, thunder, lightning, rain

A lot of tense moments last night as we had tornado warnings going off, lightning, loud thunder.  A lot of damage in the DFW area, but thankfully, we didnt get anything real bad, just rain and some wind.  My attempt to get a shot didn't turn out so well.  Most of the lightning I saw was above the clouds.  It did light up the street enough to look like it was daylight.  Maybe some sunshine today. Don has some great shots of last nights show.

Las Vegas Blvd closed

Saturday afternoon in Vegas we noticed part of Las Vegas Blvd was closed.  The police taped off a block near the Tropicana Casino.  We weren't sure what was going on, but it made it easy to cross the street without having to go to the corner.  It also provided a nice backdrop for pictures.  This group wasn't mugging it up for, but since I had my camera out and they were posing.

We found out later that the police were investigating a suspicious bag left behind a bush.  It turned out to be nothing.

I'm going to share more photos from Las Vegas this week.

Ham Orchards opened over the weekend.  I'll be out there soon for some peach ice cream.

Iron Tiger night is this Friday at 6PM at the TISD Athletic Complex-UPDATED, Iron Tiger night has been cancelled.

District 15-4A still has two team represented in the baseball playoffs.  Mesquite Poteet advances to the Regional Quarterfinals against Texarkana Texas.  Poteet has outscored their opponents in the first two rounds 21-3 while going 3-0.  Waxahachie matches up against Hallsville in another Regional Quarterfinal.  The Wax/Hallsville series will be played in Canton beginning Thursday.  Forney and Red Oak both had their season end with playoff loses.

Worst Plane Trip Ever

We all made it back safe from Vegas.  The trip getting there was not fun.  We were on the runway at DFW Wednesday when the storms hit.  The airport was put on a ground stop.  We were told the wait would be 30 minutes on the taxiway. A half hour later they said it would be another 30 minutes to an hour. After 30 minutes, we were told it would be 45 minutes.  About that time they said the airport was officially closed.  We ended up taking off after sitting in the plane for 2 hours.  Once the wheels were up, everyone started clapping, we were finally on our way!  Then we had the climb to altitude.  Just because we were able to take off didn't mean the storms had passed and the sky's were clear.  We could see lightning from the plane windows.  It was bumpy, very bumpy.  The plane was moving all directions.  The worst was the plane dropping, you could heard everyone gasp.  Once we got to altitude the ride smoothed out.  When we landed, everyone clapped again.  I think it was more in relief that we made it, more than they were in Vegas.  More on the trip after I rest up.

Political flyer in the mailbox. Is it illegal?

Tuesday is the last day for early voting in Terrell. Terrell voters are
being asked to vote either for or against Proposition 1, or Ordinance No.
2457. I don't understand all parts of this ordinance, and there is so much
misinformation out there it's hard to tell what's fact or fiction. From
what I can tell, it's supposed to be about rental properties staying in
code. I am buying owner-financed and still don't know how it relates to me.
I really don't want to get involved in all of it, but....

Monday morning as I left my house, I had a flyer at the foot of my front
door and one INSIDE my mailbox. I may be reading postal regulations from a
few years ago, but I think it's illegal to place anything in or on a mailbox
that does not have US Postage on it. This is a two page flyer that, from
what I can tell, is made to look like it came from the city.

Page 1 is titled "Items on the May 14, 2011 Ballot" Below the title it's
made to look like someone hand-wrote 'Vote Yes!'.

There are words on the page like "we" and "our". The second sentence says,
"it is an extension of our current apartment inspection program." Farther
down the page it says, "we want to prevent buildings from declining to the
point they have to be condemned." It makes it sound like this is a
city-endorsed flyer.

Statistics are cited on page 1, but the source is never named or attributed.

Page 2 is titled " City Of Terrell Crime-Free Life/Safety Inspection
Checklist". It's a checklist of some of the requirements for
something.....not sure what something is. Is it Ordinance 2457? Part of
2457? Is there a place where I can read the entire prop? I could probably
find it, but what about someone who isn't online everyday?

#4 on the list: Windows-There can not be any broken or damaged windows. I  wonder how Saturday's post fits in with this?

Bottom line, I don't know how I am going to vote yet, and I don't know who
placed the flyer in my mailbox. There are no tags showing who put it there
or who paid for it. I have tomorrow off and plan on talking to someone
about the flyer.  Saturday is the official election day.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think it's still illegal, a Federal crime, to put a flyer in a mailbox.

This is how I found it this morning.

Urban Dare 2011

Brian and I ran the Urban Dash yesterday in Dallas.  I wasn't prepared for the heat.  Near the end of the race I had to stop and sit down.  I though I was going to hit the ground face first.  I ended up losing 5 pounds.  Thankfully, I got up and finished.  Our time was 2 hours 35 minutes.  We finished 49th out of 166 teams.  This was at the word dare.  Brian has a dare posted on his site.  The race course was approx 6 miles.

In a reversal from last year when all district 15-4A baseball teams were swept out of the playoffs in the opening round, all four teams moved into the area round this year.

Forney defeated Hutto and will play Hallsville next.
Game 1: Thursday 7:00 at Forney
Game 2: Saturday 1:00 at Hallsville
Game 3: after Game 2 if needed

Red Oak won twice yesterday against Bryan Rudder and advance to play Texas High.
Game 1: Thursday 7:30 at Red Oak
Game 2: Saturday 2:00PM at Texas High
Game 3: after Game 2 if needed

Waxahachie needed 3 games to get past Hendrickson and earned a match up with Sherman
Game 1: Friday night in Waxahachie

Mesquite Poteet finished Connally in a one game playoff.
The Pirates will play the Whitehouse in the area round.

Happy Mothers Day!

Broken windows

A few windows downtown could stand to be replaced.

Today is the Urban Dare race in Dallas.  Its a one day Amazing Race around the streets of Dallas.

If you are in Terrell, keep the morning of Sunday the 22nd open.  The annual Run For The Wall makes its stop in Terrell.

The Mesquite Poteet Pirates baseball team won their opening round playoff game last night defeating Connally 3-0.  The other district teams play today.

Everyone is in a hurry

This is a different view for Moore.  I usually get my pictures with the traffic flow, not looking at the oncoming traffic.  At 5PM this road will be packed with people trying to get home to enjoy their weekend.

High School baseball playoffs started last night in Texas. Three of the four District 15-4A teams were in action.

Forney had their way with Hutto 12-1 and lead the best of 3 series, 1-0. Game 2 is Saturday in Corsicana. If Hutto wins game 2, the deciding game will start 30 minutes after game 2 ends.

Waxahachie defeated Hendrickson 5-4 and has a 1-0 lead in the best of 3 series. Game 2 is Saturday in College Station.

Red Oak dropped their game to Bryan Rudder 9-5 and are in a 1-0 in the best of 3 to Rudder. Game 2 is at Red Oak. If Red Oak wins that game, game 3 is 30 minutes after game 2.

Mesquite Poteet plays tonight against Pflugerville Connally in Waco in a 1 game playoff.

Last year every 15-4A team lost in the opening round of the playoffs.

Also, Rockwall Heath won their opening game against Frisco 7-3 and lead the series 1-0.

When you hit a brick wall...

....knock it down, or something like that.

I am hitting the wall and it's only Thursday.  The Mavericks playoff games have been starting after 9:30PM local time, are getting over well past midnight. But, they are up 2-0 on the Lakers, so I'll take it.

Saturday is Urban Dare Dallas.  It's a one day Amazing Race.  Last year Brian and I finished 20th out of about 120 teams.  We had to solve clues and complete challenges around Dallas.  We covered over 8 miles in just over 2 hours, all by foot.   We are going for the win Saturday.

Terrell, Texas Monday Morning Mashup

Hard to believe that Osama Bin Laden has finally been killed.  Between the rain and the news, sleep was in short supply last night.  This is going to be a long cold day.  I wonder who will get to play the shooter in the movie?  Chuck Norris is to old, The Rock may be busy making a Disney movie, and Brad Pitt is so 2000's.  I nominate me.

The Tigers season ended Friday night.  Saturday, past Terrell greats came back to take part in the annual Tiger Alumni Game.  Here are a few shots from the game.  More can be found on the Terrell Daily Photo Facebook page.

Its a new month, please give the Terrell page on iHigh a visit.

While Terrell's season has ended, the playoffs are just beginning for Mesquite Poteet, Forney, Red Oak and Waxahachie.  Waxahachie earned their playoff spot by ending Mesquite Poteet's 59 game district winning streak.

District 15-4A matches up with District 16-4A
Poteet takes on Pflugerville Connally
Forney matches up against Hutto
Red Oak matches up with Byran Rudder
Waxahachie vs Hendrickson rounds out the bi-district match ups

The year is not over for all of the Terrell athletes.  Three Tigers will travel up to Denton today and tomorrow to take part in the Class 4A Region II Track and Field Regional.  They will be attempting to earn a spot in the State Meet in Austin, TX on May 13th & 14th.  Representing Terrell will be Teira Hill in the long jump and triple jump, Lauren Randolph in the shot put and discus and Cornelius Horn in the 400m run.
In 2009 Aron Garcia won the State Girls 4A High Jump Championship representing the Terrell Tigers.

Looking for the results from the 2011 Terrell Heritage Jubilee BBQ Cook-off?  The International Barbeque Cookers Association has them here.

Terrell has an election coming up.  One of the issues we are voting for or against is a Rental Community Integrity Ordinance.  Has anyone ever heard of www.75160.com?  There seems to be a lot of discussion on the election at that site.  I have never heard of it, but will check it out today.

Here is a new video from a Dallas based band Free Reign.  Two of the members of the group are Dallas Cowboys.  Parts of this video were filmed at Thrillvania Thrill Park located in Terrell.
