Skywatch Friday-Tigers back in action

The football Tigers are back in action tonight in Red Oak.  The Tigers will be looking to get their first district win of the year.  Kickoff is 7:30.  The Lady Tigers volleyball team will also be in Red Oak.  The varsity gets underway at 5:30.

I caught the sun setting Wednesday night as I was leaving the ball field.  To view other skies around the world, visit Skywatch Friday.  I uploaded pictures from the game to Facebook.

The road to the World Series begins today for the Rangers.  They open their AL Division Series with Tampa Bay today at home. First pitch in the best of 5 series is at 4:07.  The Cardinals will play tomorrow in Philadelphia, first pitch is also at 4:07.

The State Fair of Texas begins today.  Its always fun to try all of the new fried foods.

Maines Paper & Food Service Inc. who announced earlier this month plans to build a distribution center in Terrell has said the center will employ 400 workers when built out.   The first phase is scheduled to be open in 2012.

TCU to the Big 12?  Works for me, and it seems a better fit than the Big East.  One of Big East power teams, South Florida, go whooped last night by Pittsburgh 44-17.  I don't look at the Big East as a football league. But they do have an automatic BSC slot.

Ready for October baseball

What a night to be a fan of baseball! The Cardinals are in the playoffs! They easily beat the Astros while the Braves lost to the Phillies in extra innings.  On August 25th the Cardinals were 10.5 games out of the playoffs.  They open in Philadelphia on Saturday.  Milwaukee will host Arizona in the other NL playoff series.

In the AL, the Boston Red Sox lost to Baltimore in the bottom of the 9th inning giving the Tampa Bay Rays, who were in extra inning with the NY Yankees, a chance to win the wild card.  Almost as soon as ESPN switched from the Boston game to the Tampa game, Evan Longoria hit a 12th inning walk off home run. The Rays trailed the Red Sox by 9 games on September 2nd.

The Rangers, who were already in the playoffs, will host Tampa Bay.  The Yankees will host Detroit in the other AL playoff series.

To go with my baseball info, some shots from last nights fall ball game in Heath.  Terrell was in the dark uniforms.

161 down, 1 to go

The St. Louis Cardinals caught the Atlanta Braves last night in the race for the NL Wild Card by defeating the Houston Astros 13-6.  The Cardinals play Houston again tonight while Atlanta has to face Philadelphia.  If the teams are still tied after tonight's game, they will have a one game playoff Thursday in St Louis.  I love football and basketball, but I grew up on baseball in St. Louis.

Of course my picture has nothing to do with the Cardinals.

I have had to cancel the Terrell Photowalk that was scheduled for this Saturday.  Feel free to upload your best Terrell photo to the photowalk website.  You can still be eligible for prizes.  Any picture must be of Terrell and taken on Saturday or Sunday.  There is a walk scheduled for Rockwall at the harbor.

If you are looking for something to do on Saturday, the McClendon-Chisholm VFD is holding their annual Chili-cook off.

Saturday is also the Stevie Ray Vaughn Remembrance Ride and Concert pre-party at East Texas Choppers.

Night colors

There's nothing really special about this picture, but I like the colors.  It was taken last night at the park.

The Cowboys pulled out a good win last night.  Not a great win, but it counts as a W, so I am sure they will take it.  My baseball Cardinals had a chance to pull into a wildcard tie with the Braves last night, but they couldnt put away the Astros.  They remain one game back with two to play.

The Lady Tigers soccer schedule has been posted to www.ihigh.com/terrelltigers.  I have visited iHigh this month?

Thrillvania is open on weekends.  Make sure you visit one of Americas Best Haunts before Halloween.

Early projections have the TicketCity Bowl getting Ohio State vs SMU for the January 2nd game.  I think the organizers would take that matchup.

Gas prices drop

One of my City Daily Photo blogging buddies has been posting updates on gas prices in her area of the country.  Her Thursday post had gas at $3.46 in Sarasota, FL.  I noticed yesterday at the Brookshire's station gas was $3.15.  That's the lowest I've seen in a while.  In some parts of Dallas the price is below $3 and it may go lower.

Saturday evening celebration

To celebrate running a 15K race, dinner Saturday night was at Los Hermanos.

New milestone

White Rock Racing held the 14th Annual Autumn Equinox 15K race this morning.  It's one loop around White Rock Lake and 5K more than what I have ever ran.  I finished, and thankfully all finishers got a medal.  There is a 10K race next weekend in Farmersville, the week after that is a 20K at White Rock.  This is all building up to something....

Skywatch Friday-Balloon Festival Panorama

This is my poor attempt to create a panorama shot from the grounds at the Plano Balloon Festival. Other Skywatch Friday sites are here.

Here is another shot from Lake Ray Hubbard at sunset.

Thunder rolls

I enjoy being able to go down to Ben Gill Park and watch some baseball in the fall.  The weather is nice and the start time is earlier than in the spring. Last night it was the team from Terrell and team made up of players from Mesquite Horn.

Click on any picture for a larger view.  I love the eyes of the pitcher focused on home as he delivers the pitch. One day I'll have a good lens that will really capture the details.

The Texas Rangers are close to clinching another trip to the post season.  Lets hope they can at least match last years accomplishment.  My home town team, the St. Louis Cardinals, have been hot and have climbed to only 1.5 games out of the National League wild card spot.  They are 12-2 in their last 14 games, while the team they are chasing, the Atlanta Braves, have gone 6-8.

Always playing catch up

I always seem to be a step behind.  Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays have turned into my running days.  I'm up to about 4 miles each day with a timed run on Saturday or Sunday.  This weekend its a 15K around White Rock Lake.

Festival grounds

Without balloons there really wasn't much to photograph. I found another balloon festival that sounds fun.  Its the Celina Balloon Festival on Nov 5th & 6th.

Terrell, Texas Monday Morning Mashup

Yesterday was the 1st Annual (heh) Plano Balloon Fest 5K and Half Marathon.  I ran the 5K and finished with my best time 32:57.  I'm not sure how I did it, but I got signed up for a 15K on the 24th.  The course is 1 time around White Rock Lake.

The balloon part of the festival was pretty much a dud.  It started with bad weather on Friday and continued through Sunday afternoon.  The balloons never got off the ground the entire weekend.  We did get to get up close on the balloons they did inflate yesterday morning.  I didn't have my camera since it was close to race time.  This is from my phone.

We got a nice thunderstorm last night, the power flashed off for just a second.  Don caught some great lightning shots.

September 23rd is the opening of Thrillvania Thrill Park.  Always voted one of the best haunted house attractions in the country.

No football game this week. The Tigers are off until September 30th when they travel to Red Oak.

If you haven't seen the pictures from the Flights of our Fathers, click over to the Facebook page.  Hit the 'like' button when you get over there.

Will today be the day we learn the destination of Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State?  The PAC 12 or 16?  It beats staying in the Big 12 and adding smaller schools.  With the Big East crumbling, I wonder what TCU will do?  Where does Missouri and Baylor fit in?  I would love to see them move to the SEC, but I don't think that's going to happen.

Flights of our Fathers 2011

Yesterday was the annual Flights of our Fathers at Terrell Municipal Airport and the #1 British Flying Training Squadron.  Its always fun to take pictures of the planes and even better that its in Terrell.  I have a complete album posted on the Terrell Daily Photo Facebook page.  There is also a slideshow on the Terrell Tribunes site with photos taken by Don Johnson.

Skywatch Friday-Lake Ray Hubbard boat dock

I took this last Friday.  This is the boat dock next to the highway 66 bridge in Rockwall, TX.  The dock is closed because of the low water level.  This is the same dock as in this photo.

More Skywatch Friday sites are here.

Tonight the Terrell Tigers play host to the Waxahachie Indians in a 15-4A varsity football matchup.  Tonight is band night.  Kickoff is 7:30.

Ben Gill lake needs water

We got a little rain yesterday.  Not enough to fill the lake at Ben Gill Park in Terrell. The lake is usually filled with water, frogs and ducks.

I found the frogs.
I found a couple of cute ducks

The ducks found the frogs.

I didn't know ducks like to eat frogs.

Ducks are not so cute now. RIP Frogs

Record breaker

With the temperature pushing past 100 yesterday, 2011 passed 1980 for the year with the most days 100 degrees or more.  Yesterday was day #70.  We still could use a few weeks of rain though.

The First Christian Church in Terrell will be a part of the Social Science Club Christmas home tour.  Its celebrating 135 years of ministry this weekend.

This Friday night is band night at the Terrell football game.  I added photos from last Friday nights game in Mesquite against Poteet to the Facebook page.

This weekend is also the Flights of our Fathers Fly-In.  You can find the schedule by clicking the link to the right.  This photo is from last years fly over.

I may have to find something else to track next year.  My street hasn't changed since Spring.

Terrell, Texas Monday Morning Mashup

I was able to attend two different types of remembrances yesterday on the 10th anniversary of 9/11.  The first was the 9/11 Heroes run in Dallas, TX. The Travis Manion Foundation orgainized 5K races all over the country with a goal to never forget the sacrifices of all of the Heroes of September 11th — veteran, first responder, and civilian.  It was announced at the Dallas event that over 700 people had signed up for the run with 542 runners being timed.

A Navy ROTC group finishes up the 5K race.

Runners enjoy snacks and water after the race.

This was in downtown Dallas.

The second event was a 9/11 memorial service at the Veterans Memorial at Ben Gill Park in Terrell.

Friday night run

Since the Tigers played Thursday night, I had a Friday night free.  I took the time to run the Highway 66 bridge in Rockwall.  Its 2 miles down and 2 miles back.  I ran a total of 5 miles.

Tigers bowled over by the Pirates

The Tigers lost, the are back at it next week at home against Waxahachie. Click over to www.ihigh.com/terrelltigers for the final score on the ticker.

Game Day

The Tigers road show travels to Mesquite tonight to take on the Pirates from Poteet High School.  Both teams sport 2-0 records heading into the District opener.  Kickoff is set for 7PM.

The NFL season gets underway tonight with the Saints visiting the Super Bowl Champion Packers. My forecast Saints 27-24.

Wheelchair Tennis superstar and three-time Paralympic medalist; Randy Snow, who was from Terrell, has been nominated posthumously for induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

The local NBC affiliate had an interview last night with the parents of Staff Sgt Shawn McNabb, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2009.

Terrell, Texas Tuesday Morning Mashup

Prayers go out to all of the people who have lost homes and the firefighters and volunteers who are battling the fires in Texas.

We got a break our break from the heat over the holiday weekend. The high temperature on Monday was 85.  I ran a 10K in the morning and the temperature at the start of the race was in the 60s.  The race was the Labor of Love 10K at Stonebridge Beach Club in McKinney. This was my 3rd 10K, and I beat my best time by 7 minutes,  I finished in 1:12:45.  Still only good for 16th in my age group...out of 16 runners.

The next race is the 9-11 Heroes Run in Dallas on 9-11.

The Tigers football team travels to Mesquite this Thursday night for their opening district game against the Poteet Pirates.  Both teams are 2-0 and scoring an average of 46 points a game.  The Pirates are ranked in the top 5 of most DFW 4A lists.  Make the trip over to Mesquite to support the Tigers!

If you havent visted iHigh yet, what are you waiting for?

Saturday is the Terrell Outdoors Expo & Banquet at First Baptist Church in Terrell.

Today's picture is a view from the race location in McKinney.
