Terrell, Texas Monday Morning Mashup

We are getting ready for a drastic weather swing tonight and tomorrow.  The high temperature was 71 degrees Sunday.  Tuesday we are expecting sleet and freezing rain with wind chill factors in the single digits.

This Thursday on CBS  is the Super Bowls Greatest Commericals.  I have mentioned Cilla on here before, she is the owner of Saint Cox Dog Resort.  One of her dalmatians, Do-Re-Mi, will be part of the CBS show.  I have my DVR set to record it.  Do-Re-Mi has his own Facebook page.

I uploaded 2 albums to the Terrell Daily Photo Facebook page.  I have some pictures from the Terrell Lady Tigers basketball game against Forney, and an album of shots from the first baseball practice of the year.   Check out the photos, if you see someone you know, tag them, and make sure you suggest the page to your friends.

This is a busy week for Tigers sports, soccer and basketball are both going strong and on Saturday, weather permitting, is the 100 inning baseball game.  Check out the Tigers on ihigh.com for the daily schedule.

This is also a busy week for Super Bowl party's.  My invites must have been lost in the mail.  I did hear that I could go see Prince Friday night for only $1500 a ticket.

We went to the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo yesterday.  The rodeo was sold out, but thats only a small part of whats going on.  I'll have another picture tomorrow from Fort Worth and an album up on Facebook later this week.

The Caveman Crawl is June 18th.  Today is the last day for early bird registration.  Last year Brian and I went out and took pictures of the runners.  This year I want to run the course, but I also want to take pictures.  We were excited to see that they used some of our pictures for this years website.

Its neat to see someone be able to use your pictures for something, like Caveman Crawl. Of course, they have permission.  Not so neat to see your pictures someplace you didn't approve of, or for someone to use my site as a source of info and not give credit.

Remember when you had to hit a button with your foot that was on the left side of the floor board to turn on your bright lights?

FAIL

I was trying for pictures of birds in flight.  I felt the mosquito's, but didn't see them until I downloaded the pictures.  So, no birds.

First practice

Yesterday, the Terrell Tigers high school squad held their first practice of the year.   The sun was out and it was warm, perfect baseball weather.

The Tigers mission is to make the playoffs for the 3rd year in a row.  There were over 25 kids at practice and another half dozen or so there for try outs.  All of them were trying to impress first year Head Coach Gage Davis.

Next Saturday, weather permitting, the Tigers will have a 100 inning game for a fundraiser. Start time is 10am and everyone is invited.  Tiger players are out around town asking for donations, if you see a player coming your way, help out the team.

When I was a kid I would go to as many sporting events as I could. When I got into high school, my Mom started letting me go to St. Louis Cardinal baseball games by myself. OK, she would drive me over, drop me off and pick me up after it was over. I could sit in the bleachers for $2. I would get dropped off as soon as the gates opened, two hours before game time.  I'd sit in the left field bleachers, front row. The Cardinals would take batting practice before the gates opened, but I could watch the visiting team take bp and the Cardinals run the outfield. My Grandmother would sometimes let me take her camera to the games. I still have some of the pictures somewhere. I remember waiting all winter for baseball season to start.  Yesterdays practice made me remember those days.  I joined the Air Force in 82 the year they won the World Series. I've never been to a Ranger game, maybe this is the year.  First day of practice and the sky is the limit.

Nice days

Yesterday was a nice day, today is suppose to be even better.

Colors at night

I like the way the color turns out on this Church just around the corner from my house.

I have a feeling that there will be more than just Coach Gilbert and staff moving to Lancaster High School.

One day soon I am going to drive around Terrell and take pictures of all of the Subway sandwich shops.  I think we have 5 of them with 2 more on the way.

I've been watching the new ABC show Off the Map.  I'm liking it, but it sure is graphic.

Fridays temperature is now suppose to push 70 degrees.  Sounds like a great day for baseball practice.

Lady Tigers start slow but still beat Forney

The big news yesterday reported by the Terrell Tribune, is that Terrell Athletic Director and head football coach Chris Gilbert is leaving to take the head coaching job at Lancaster.  But the games still go on.

The Lady Tigers hosted the Forney Jackrabbits at the TISD Complex Tuesday night in a District 15-4A contest.  For the Lady Tigers to keep their slim playoff hopes alive, they would have to complete the sweep of Forney.  They defeated them in December 54-42.

The Lady Tigers started slow, but once they got it going, there was no looking back.  Forney had a 9-2 lead with only 1:19 left in the first quarter.  A stiff Terrell defense held the Jackrabbits to only 1 more point the rest of the first half.  Terrell scored 6 points in the last 1:19 of the quarter and trailed only 9-8 after one.  In the second quarter Terrell's full court defense threw Forney off of its game and they never recovered.  Terrell led at half time 20-10.

Forney came out after the half and attempted to get back into the game, in the third quarter the best they could do was stay even, and after three Terrell still held a 10 point lead, 28-18. Forney cut the Tigers lead to 29-22 in the fourth quarter but the Tigers finished the game on a 13-2 run and won going away 42-24.

The Lady Tigers are 6-6 in district and a full 2 games behind Red Oak, who had a bye last night.  Terrell plays at Corsicana on Friday night.  In their first meeting the Lady Tigers won 42-17.  Red Oak plays at Forney on Friday night. Red Oak won their first meeting 59-32.

Terrell: 8-12-8-14-42
Forney: 9-1- 8-6- 24

Terrell:
#20 - Tonisha Dean - 11pts
#21 - Ty Bolden - 8pts
#3 - Gabby Wren - 7pts
#5 - Tiara White - 6pts
#32 Cortney Hubbard - 5pts
#10 - Kelcee Derrick - 5pts

Forney:
#11 - Carter - 10pts
#23 - Harvey - 6pts
#3 - Spring - 3pts
#31 - Tate - 2pts
#41 - Davis - 2pts
#5 - Morrow - 1pt

The boys basketball team went on the road and defeated Forney 57-45.

Chris Gilbert leaving

The Terrell Tribune reported this afternoon that Terrell AD and head football coach Chris Gilbert is leaving to take a head coach position at Lancaster High School.  Visit the Terrell Tribune for more details.

Tigers baseball look to make it three in a row

Heath Hottinger taking a swing against Cleburne.
This Friday the Terrell baseball team will start the long journey to the playoffs. The Tigers have made the playoffs the last two years, but making
it a third time will be a bit more difficult in the revamped District 15-4A.  Leading the Tigers will be new Terrell baseball Coach Gage Davis. Coach
Davis was selected to lead the program in June after Coach Casey Rush accepted a job out of the District.

Davis moved to Terrell from the Rockwall Heath baseball program, who made it to the State Regional Finals last year and finished with a 40-3 record.

Besides Terrell, District 15-4A will include holdover playoff teams Poteet, Red Oak and Forney. Joining the holdovers are playoff teams from last year's
district 16-4A, Corsicana and Ennis. Rounding out the tough district are
Waxahachie, West Mesquite and Lancaster.

Coach Davis sees the favorites in the district as Poteet, Waxahachie and
Corsicana.
Coach Gage Davis at his introduction to the Tigers in June.

The Tigers play a tough non-district schedule that includes tournaments in
DeSoto, Corsicana and Rockwall. The tough tournament schedule may not
produce a desired win-loss record, but it will get the team ready for when
the play begins on district games that actually count.

When asked about his expectations for the Tigers, Coach Davis hoped for the kids to just play hard and never give up. He expects his team this year to
compete hard every game and hopefully play their way into the playoffs for a 3rd consecutive year. Gage said, "our new district is going to be tough, but we have the talent to compete with any of them on any given day."  Fridays practice will start around 3:20. A try out will be held starting
around 5. Coach Davis expects about 15-20 kids to tryout.

Senior Cody Weishaar taking a practice swing last year.
Asked for advice he could give to a young kid trying out for a sport, Gage said "to make sure that they are prepared and in shape for whatever sport
they are trying out for." Gage went on to explain when trying a sport for the first time or a sport they haven't played in a long time, that they'll
be behind others who've been playing for a while. He added, "it will take dedication and lots of extra work to get caught up."

The Tigers will have four scrimmages prior and a home contest against Garland Lakeview before playing in the Desoto Tournament that begins on
February 24th. A complete varsity and junior varsity schedule is posted on www.ihigh.com/terrelltigers.

100 inning baseball game

The Tigers will also be holding a 100 inning baseball game fundraiser at
10am on Saturday, February 5th at the ball field in Ben Gill Park.

Not sure what a 100 inning game is? The rules for the game are: every hitter
starts with a 3 ball 2 strike
count, so they only get 1 pitch. After 3 outs the bases are cleared, but the
team that was hitting gets to continue to hit until they have 15 outs.

After 15 outs, the team at bat goes to the field and the team that was
fielding goes to hit. Every 3 outs counts as an inning (instead of 6).

The game will start at 10AM. It's free to attend, but they will be taking
donations throughout the game. Come out and spend part of your Saturday at
the ballfield in Ben Gill Park. The kids can use all the support we can give
them!  I will have more on the 100 inning game as the date gets closer.

Terrell, Texas Monday Morning Mashup

Great football games yesterday....if you are a Packers or Steelers fan. Calab Hanie, who graduated from Forney High School, came into the game as the Bears 3rd string, emergency quarterback and almost led them to a victory.  What a story it would have been if he could be the starting QB in the Super Bowl in Dallas.

I posted a poll on ihigh, who do you think will win?   Vote for Green Bay or Pittsburgh.

Former Southwestern Christian College student athlete Nicoya Jackson is helping to lead Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles to a 14-1 record.

Yesterdays 5K run was fun.  It was the Too Cold to Hold race in Norbuck Park in Dallas.

The Lady Tigers soccer team finishes up their non-district play this week.  Tomorrow night they travel to play Wylie East.  Thursday they travel to Hallsville for the Hallsville Ladycat Invitational.  The boys have one more game before district play begins.

DMN still giving incorrect sports statistics. I wonder if they will try to charge for them?

Early look at the weather for Friday is sunny and in the 60s.  In the words of a famous Swedish astronaut...wee hooo.

An album from Friday nights boys basketball OT basketball game has been posted to Facebook and ihigh.

Anyone know if there will be a Fountain 5K at this years Heritage Jubilee?

Out manned

Friday after work was my first chance to watch a soccer game, even if it was only part of the first half.  The Tigers were playing in a tournament in Garland, which isn't far off the route home.  Terrell was no match for the soccer powers that were entered into the tournament.  They lost by a combined score of 16-0 to Plano, Allen and Rockwall Heath.  The losses may have been one sided and disappointing but they were not district contests.

There will be better days

What started as a day with promise ended after a long day of setbacks.  The Lady Tigers soccer team started the day off with a 3-1 win against Argyle in the Lovejoy Tournament.  The Tigers moved on to play host Lovejoy but dropped that game 8-0.

The boys soccer team is playing in the Garland Invitational against some of the best teams in the State.  The lost both games today, the first was 6-0 to Plano, then lost 4-0 to Allen.

The boys basketball team forced Red Oak into overtime at home but fell 61-56.

The Lady Tigers basketball team traveled to Red Oak and ended up on the short end of a 57-41 score.

Showing my moon

Nothing for you today.  I have a trip to the dentist on the schedule.

The weather is suppose to turn bad again today. We had a full moon the last few nights. By the time I went out last night to get a picture the clouds had started to roll in. This was during a break in the clouds.  Can you make something out of that?

Take a minute to look over the the Terrell ihigh site. Its for the Tiger athletics and the booster club. I have been doing all of the work myself, let me know what you think.

Some make it look easy

Some people make running a 5k look effortless.

I missed this last month, former Terrell Tiger and University of North Texas defensive lineman Brandon Kennedy was named to the Sun Belt Conferences All Decade Team.  He was also named Tenth Anniversary Most Outstanding Defensive Player.

Red Oak Hawks ladies basketball lost to Waxahachie last night.  Terrell is only 1 1/2 games behind RO for the final playoff spot.  They meet Friday night in Red Oak.

The best place for local news and sports is in local papers.  Yesterday was the inauguration of Rick Perry to another term as Texas Governor.  The food was catered by Eddie Dean.  Eddie Deans facility is located in Terrell.  I saw a lot of stories online yesterday about Eddie Dean catering the event.    The only story I found that mentioned Terrell or with original content was in the Terrell Tribune.

Terrell, Texas Tuesday Morning Mashup

MMM a day late.

Just think of the fun this Mom will have telling her child that his face will freeze like that. Guess he didnt like being out on a cold and wet Saturday morning.

The Lady Tigers took a break from tournament action last night in Royse City.  The Tigers shut out Bulldogs 3-0.  Mollie Tolbert scored all three goals for Terrell.  Beginning Thursday, the ladies will play in the Lovejoy Leopard Challenge Tournament.  The tournament bracket as been posted on the ihigh website.  Click the link to the right and follow Lovejoy ISD Leopard Challenge Tournament bracket.

The Dallas Morning News has the Fort Worth Trimble Tech girls basketball team scoring 298 points a game.  Just as impressive are the Ennis Lions girls team, they have given up 0 points for the year.  BTW, Terrell beat Ennis on Jan 7th, 44-32.  The Morning News is rolling out their new look and subscriber content.  Why would I pay for the privilege to get incorrect information?

The Lady Tigers basketball team has an important road game Friday night in Red Oak. Tip off is 7:30. Currently Red Oak holds a 2 game lead over the Lady Tigers for the final playoff spot in District 15-4A.   The Lady Tigers are off tonight, while Red Oak plays Waxahachie.  Barring an upset, RO will be 2 1/2 games ahead of the Tigers at game time.  Terrell dropped the first meeting against Red Oak 53-48.

The boys basketball team will host Red Oak Friday night.  The boys are 2-6 in District and 4 games back from the final playoff spot with 8 games to play.  Only 3 of the remaining games are at home.

News out of Denison is that Terrell Assistant City Manager Mike Sims is a finalist for the City Manager job there. A big jump if he is selected, but I am sure he would an excellent job.

Who will play nose tackle in the annual touch football game?

Hot Chocolate

Brian and I ran in the Post Addison Circle Hot Chocolate 5K & 10K yesterday.  I ran the 5K, he ran the 10K.  The roads were a bit wet, but the temperature was in the 40s. It was a fun race.

Brian has a photo posted of him coming up to the finish line that I took.

Walking back to the car I took a shot of these oak leaves and acorns.

Lady Tigers win in Overtime

The game Friday night between the Lady Tigers of Terrell and the Waxahachie Indians didn't start well for the Tigers.  It was midway through the first quarter before the Tigers got on the scoreboard.  By then the score was 8-2 Indians.  Terrell ended the quarter down by the same 8 points 15-7.  The team started to come to life in the second quarter outscoring the Indians 12-6, they trailed 21-15 with just over 2 minutes to go in the half but scored the final 4 points to go into the break only down by 2 points 21-19.

In the second half the Lady Tigers pressing defense started creating opportunities.  Tonisha Dean gave the Tigers their first lead with 23-22 with 5:17 left to go in the 3rd quarter.  The Tigers built a 4 point lead but every time the ladies would be poised to open the game up, the Indians would claw back to tie the score.

The Tigers held a 2 point lead with just over a minute to play but the Indians created a turnover and scored a layup to tie the score.  The Tigers turned the ball over again and the Indians had a chance to win the game but they never got a shot off.

Overtime was all the Lady Tigers.  Tonisha Dean opened up with a layup to give the Tigers a 2 point lead.  An Indian turnover led to a 3 point basket by Dean.  The Tigers were able to hold on and win in overtime 55-49.

The Lady Tigers win, along with Red Oaks loss to Poteet pulls the ladies within 2 games of the final playoff spot for the District.

Terrell: 7-12-13-13-10-55OT

The boys Runnin' Tigers missed a chance to gain a game on 4th place Waxahachie Friday night losing 55-54 on the road. The boys are 2-6 in district play only good for 7th place,  they are 3 1/2 games behind Waxahachie for the final playoff spot.

Fall Sports Banquet

Last night the Terrell High School athletic department held their Fall Sports Banquet to recognize the accomplishments of the students who take part in the fall sports.  Awards were given for cross country, tennis, volleyball, football and the sports trainers. I have a few more pictures posted on the ihigh website. Follow the link to the right.

The temperature has gone above freezing just enough each day this week to let the snow melt and then turn into ice at night.

Runnin' Tigers pull away from the Pirates

The Terrell boys varsity basketball team, trying to break a 3 game district losing streak, ran out to a 12 point lead after 3 quarters against the Pirates from Mesquite Poteet and held on to win 53-45.  The Pirates made a run to close the Tigers lead to 3 points with less than 3 and half minutes to go, but the Tigers were able to hit their free throws to keep the lead and take the game. Jherrod Stiggers led all scorers with 22 points.

The Lady Tigers traveled to Poteet to take on the State ranked Lady Pirates.  The girls were able to keep the game close till half time, only trailing 25-22 at the break but couldn't maintain their momentum in the 3rd period.  They fell behind by as many as 14 points before closing to within 9 late in the game.  They ended up on the short end of a 52-37 score. Tonisha Dean led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 16 points.

The Lady Tigers host the Waxahachie Indians Friday night, while the boys go on the road to play the Indians.

Martin Gallegos from Terrell finished as second runner up in the Ultimate Pizza Throwdown in Frisco, TX.

A new series

Cilla, owner of Saint Cox Dog Resort, and author of A Swede lost in Texas has started a new series called The Weekly Tree.  Shes documenting the changes to one tree weekly over the course of a year.  She has encouraged others to do the same.  I can't commit to taking a picture every week, but I will commit to taking a monthly picture.  I thought instead of doing one tree, I would do the trees that line my street.  I took this picture on 1/9 and will take a picture each month on the 9th.

The Warrior Dash is returning to North Texas in 2011. It wont be in Forney though, they are going to set up in Roanoke, TX. There will be two days, April 16th & 17th. You can sign up now.

The date for the 2011 Caveman Crawl is rumored to be June 11th. I took photos at both events, and I would give the nod to the Crawl. The Crawl is a 5K off-road obstacle course held in Bridgeport, TX. As soon as they release more information I'll pass it along.

I stayed up late last night watching the exciting finish to the BCS National Championship game. I was hoping for the Ducks to pull it out, but I cant complain with the finish. TCU has finished second in the final AP poll. What happens if for some reason Auburn is declared to have used an ineligible player? Does Auburn forfeit the National Title? Is TCU awarded to title?

Terrell, Texas Monday Morning Mashup

We got our first snow yesterday.  I don't know the official total, but I would guess we got between 3" & 4" in Terrell.  I have additional photos on the Terrell Daily Photo Facebook page.  Brian also has shots on the Texas Daily Photo Facebook page,  check Brians site for his Facebook link.  The snow and the threat of overnight ice was enough to cancelled classes today for all of Terrell ISD.

Is it time for a new banner photo?

Above is the Tigers ball field at Ben Gill park.  Tuesdays Terrell High School athletic schedule is below.  Come out and support your favorite Tiger team.  Check the ihigh link to the right for the complete basketball, soccer and just added baseball schedules.

The snow has started

Its anyone's guess how long it will last or how much we will get.  Tonight its suppose to mix with freezing drizzle.

At the Superbowl 5K

A few shots from the 5K race yesterday in Richardson.  They announced that there were over 1000 runners. My time was 34:04.  About a half minute off of my best time.  The race was pretty flat, but the course was narrow.  At times it was difficult to get past the walkers.  These are from my camera phone.

It's Randy White

I didnt win the 5K or win Super Bowl tickets, but I did get to see former Cowboy and NFL Hall of Famer Randy White at the Superbowl 5K race.

Another 5K run

Off to another 5K run this morning, this time in Richardson.  Its the Superbowl XLV 5K.  I'll try to get a picture up later today from the race.

Last night the Terrell Lady Tigers traveled to Ennis for a District 15-4A match up with the Ennis Lions. Ty Bolden scored 14 points and Hailey Whiteside, starting in her varsity game, scored 10 points leading the Lady Tigers to a 44-32 win. Terrell's district record is 4-4 record.  Their next game is Tuesday the 11th at Mesquite Poteet.  The Lady Tigers lost to Poteet at home in November and the Pirates are tied with Lancaster at 7-1 in district play.

The boys Runnin' Tigers lost a close game at home to Ennis 62-61. The Ennis squad is ranked #11 in the State class 4A.

Dentist visit

I had to take a trip to the dentist yesterday.  I have a couple of wisdom teeth that need to be yanked out and needed a cleaning.  The cashier at the local liquor/lotto/gas store offered to pull one, but I passed on the offer.  I had the cleaning and one pulled yesterday, I go back in two weeks to get the other two pulled out by cold steel pliers.

My dentist is Dr. Kines in Terrell, her and her staff are very good and professional.  This was my view.  I was on gas, so I don't remember much, except that song Dynamite kept playing in my head, not the whole song, just la la la we gon' light it up, like it's dynamite, la la la we gon' light it up, like it's dynamite la la la.....

The Runnin' Tigers host the Lions from Ennis tonight at the TISD Complex.  Ennis is undefeated in district play, 16-4 over all and ranked #11 in the State by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches in class 4A.  The Lady Tigers travel to Ennis

Tomorrows race is the Super Bowl XLV 5K in Richardson.  I have only ran once this week, so my time will probably not be very good.  However, they will be giving away a pair of Super Bowl tickets to one lucky runner, and you don't have to win the race to win the tickets.

Lesson learned

The Terrell Lady Tigers hosted the Tigers from Lancaster Tuesday night at the TISD Complex.  Lancaster jumped out to a 9-0 lead and led 18-5 after the 1st period.  The Lady Tigers could never recover or solve the Lancaster trap defense and fell behind by as many as 35 points.  The final score was 67-33.  Their district record drops to 3-4, still in 5th place in District 15-4A.  They travel to Ennis for a Friday night district game.

I am Superman

Saturdays race in Rockwall was called I am Superman 5k. Runners were encouraged to dress up as their favorite superhero. You can see the Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael behind Brian in the picture below. They posted the race results yesterday afternoon.

Somehow the race organizers mixed up mine and Brians name. The results show me finishing in 32:32 and Brian finishing in 38:38.  If you don't say anything I won't either.

Terrell, Texas Monday Morning Mashup

From Terrell Daily Photo

Time to get back to work, but the New Year break was fun. It was topped by attending the inaugural TicketCity Bowl in Dallas on Saturday. I uploaded an album of photos to the Facebook page.  Tyler Potts, Tech QB, was named the TicketCity Bowl MVP. Organizers could not have hoped for a better game. Tech held a 31-9 lead early in the 3rd quarter, but ended up having to intercept a Northwestern pass on the final play to come away with a 45-38 win. The crowd was announced at just over 40,000, there may not have been that many in the stands, but they were loud and having a chilly good time.   I look forward to more opportunities to roam the sidelines.

Saturday morning was the I am Superman 5K race in Rockwall. The temperature was just above freezing, but there were still runners in shorts. Not me, I put on my sweat pants and double long sleeve shirt. I should have paid more attention to the pants. The elastic is shot, so I ran trying to hold up my sweats. That's my excuse and I am sticking to it. I ran a 38:54, not a good time.  Next Saturdays race is the Super Bowl XLV 5K in Richardson.

Tigers soccer gets started this week.  The girls have home scrimmages tonight against Waxahachie and Friday against Wylie.  The boys begin play Tuesday night at Rockwall and Friday at Mansfield Timberview.

The basketball teams get back to district play tomorrow.  The girls host Lancaster at 7:30PM.  The boys travel to Lancaster.

A couple of pictures from yesterdays TicketCity Bowl held in Dallas.  This is a first year bowl that I had a media sideline pass.

2010 Photo of the Year

Voting for Photo of the Year ended in a tie. Since this is my site, I get to pick a winner between the two.

The photo I selected may not seem that strange to people who live in an area that gets a lot of snow every year. But in Terrell we do not expect to wake up and see over a foot of snow on the ground. Because of that, this was chosen as the Picture of the Year. The photo was taken on the morning of February 12, 2010.

Below is the photo that tied for the most votes. It was taken during the Caveman Crawl off road race in Bridgeport, TX.

I look forward to snapping pictures all over Texas in 2011, including more sports and action shots. As always, check the Terrell Daily Photo Facebook page for more photos, and pictures of the 2010 Photo of the Year finalists.

Only 28.5 miles ran last month. This month gets started quick, running the I am Superman 5K in Rockwall. After the race, hopefully a fun photo opportunity.
