The flu, bad weather and morning visitor

Seems like there has been a dark cloud hanging over us all week. The UIL has suspended all statewide interscholastic competition until May 11. That includes Fridays scheduled home baseball game and the softball and baseball playoffs. I don't think they have finalized the plans on when games can resume, the situation seems to be constantly changing. The Terrell Tribune has promised local reaction in today's paper.

We also have been getting a lot of rain, with more on the way. Flooding has happened in some areas of the Dallas/Ft.Worth area, but I don't think anything in the Terrell area. We got a steady rain last night, nothing bad. In August we will be asking for rain.

This was taken on the way home from work yesterday just as the storms were rolling in. No, that is not my driveway....I wish.

I also had a morning visitor today as I was about to step into the shower. My cats liked it, but I just wanted it gone. I am glad I was taking a picture of him and he wasnt taking a picture of me trying to get rid of it. I was able to get him and put him out on the porch.

Terrell abandoned Nike missile site

I get requests every now and then for specific pictures or places. Today's post is one of those places. Part of Terrell's unique history is its place as host to a Nike Missile site during the 1960's. Terrell was one of four missile sites that ringed Dallas. The other three sites were in Denton, Mineral Wells and Alvarado. The purpose of the missile site was to protect Dallas-Fort Worth area from Soviet bombers. The missile site was divided into two areas. One was the launching area, that area is private property that is hidden from street view. The other is the control area. Today's photos are whats left of the control area. The area is private property, so the pictures were taken from the street through a fence. It would be neat to be able to walk around the grounds of this and the launching area. Maybe someday a marker will be put up explaining what the site was for. I am sure what's left of the site will be gone in a few more years.

If you have a request drop me an email.

This is the largest remaining structure at the control site. It was
either a radar or observation tower.

This is the same structure, from the road.

The remains of an old sentry post.

The collapsed walls of one of the barracks.

The main road in the control area.

Here are a few resources I used to find the site and gather information.

This seems like a lifetime ago

Today is a roadtrip back in time.

An old friend from my Air Force days recently got in contact with me through Facebook. We were roommates in what seems like another life. Back in early 1990, when I returned from Germany I wasn't able to bring back all of my possessions, they would only allow so much weight to come back. Some of the things left were my old high school yearbooks. My old Air Force friend, who held on to those books for almost 20 years, mailed them to me last week. I have been spending a lot of time thumbing through the pages. I can't believe he held on to them for so long. I owe him a big thank you. Thanks to him I have all four years from high school AND my 7th grade yearbook.

This is a picture I scanned from my senior yearbook. It was the third year radio students. I am in the front row on the right in the Air Force shirt. We were WRTE 89.5 FM. Cahokia, IL. Class of 1982.

I was a nerd in high school. Who would have guessed?

Lone Star Park

We spent the day yesterday out at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie. I hit the superfecta, picking the first 4 horses in race 10. A one dollar bet paid $287.00, I wish I had made the bet for a dollar. My bet was for ten cents, I won $28.70. I am not complaining, for ten cents, that's not a bad return.

Almost

Terrell lost 3-2 to Forney Friday night. Michael has some great shots from the baseball and softball game. Head over to his site, Obstructed View to check them out.

Hopefully, we are off to bet on the horses today. Maybe I
will hit the super and win enough for a big camera. :-)

This is Cilla and Crispy. Check out her blog and her business websites, Daimilus and Kennel Saint Cox

I think this guy was with the Cowboy Church. Would that make him a space cowboy?

With mud like this...

....you may need something like this to get around.

The Tribune posted the winners for all Barbecue divisions.

Tigers hang tough

One night after clinching a playoff spot, the Terrell Tigers hosted Division leading and Area Class 4A #1 ranked Mesquite Poteet Pirates at Ben Gill Field. The Tigers kept the game close but lost 3-0. Jeremy Ringo pitched a solid complete game for the Tigers, but 2 bad pitches in the third inning allowed the Pirates to score all of their runs. Austin Blunt pitched a shutout for the Pirates. Terrell's best scoring chance came in the bottom of the third. The Tigers loaded the bases with two outs but a runner was picked off second base.

Even though the Tigers came up short, they proved they can play with the heavy hitters. Friday night the Tigers host the Forney Jackrabbits.

Logan Smith moves a runner over, early in the game.

Terrell Heritage Jubilee-THS entertainment

Entertainment during the day Saturday was provided by the bands and choirs of the Terrell Independent School District.

Below is the Terrell High School Stage Band.

Here is a clip of the THS percussion.

Last night the Tigers played Red Oak in a game that was rescheduled from Friday night. The Tigers came out on top 8-2. That should clinch a playoff spot for them.
Dustin Jackson was the winning pitcher and Logan Smith hit a solo HR to the tie the score at 2 in the 6th.

The Tigers baseball team plays Mesquite Poteet tonight at 7:30 at Ben Gill Field. The Pirates are 18-2 and the top ranked 4A team in the Dallas area. Come out and support the Tigers and say hi if you see me.

Terrell Heritage Jubilee-Frisbee dogs

One of the kid favorites at the Jubilee are the Frisbee dogs. They performed Saturday and Sunday. It's hard to get a shot at just the right time. Thankfully I got two.

This is going to be a hard week for the Tigers baseball team. Tonight they travel to Red Oak to make up the game rained out on Friday. Tomorrow they host Mesquite Poteet at 7:30 and Friday they host Forney also at 7:30. JV games start at 4:30 for both home games. The Tigers are almost in the playoffs, come out and support Coach Rush and the Tigers.

Terrell Heritage Jubilee-Gasoline Alley

Gasoline alley started a little wet, with a shower that passed through early. As the sun came out so did the crowds and the car owners shining up the fenders, rolling down windows and making sure their baby's looked their best. This is just a small sample of the cars that were on display. The Jubilee continues today.

BBQ cook-off at the Jubilee

A little rain couldn't keep people from heading out to the Heritage Jubilee Saturday. The Jubilee continues Sunday, bring out the family. Here are a few pictures of the BBQ cook-off. I will post pictures of the car show tomorrow.

Sundays lineup includes a motorcycle show, frisbee dogs and entertainment on the stage.

These people are serious about their BBQ.

Unlimited notes

Tonight is family night at the Heritage Jubilee Carnival $30 will get unlimited rides all night. This is a drive-by shot from last night.

A few quick notes

I wasn't able to make it to the Kaufman TEA party yesterday. It was held during the noon hour. I did stop by the Rockwall TEA party at the Rockwall City Hall for a few minutes. I really wanted to just see what was going on. There was a nice size crowd. I didn't take any pictures.

Shawn has started a blog. I added a link to his site on the right.

Michael over at Obstructed View is off to a great start as publisher of the Tribune. Just changing the look of the paper has created a feeling of something new and fresh. He said there are more changes to come.

Ian Kinsler is a beast. As much as I love baseball, I have lived in the Dallas area for 15 years or so, and have never been to a Texas Rangers baseball game.

Wednesdays Tribune had an insert with a schedule of events for the Terrell Heritage Jubilee. The Jubilee is held in Ben Gill Park.

It looks like the Dallas area will not have a casting call for Big Brother 11....bummer. I was hoping after the success of the Survivor casting call in Terrell they would do something in the Dallas area.

This is going to be a long day, I was up till midnight watching the St. Louis Blues hockey playoff game. They lost, but put up a good fight. They are a heavy underdog.
