Vietnam Memorial Wall of Texas, Kaufman, Texas

I know I promised band pictures today, but they will have to come later in the week.

The Vietnam Memorial Wall of Texas made its way to Kaufman, Texas on Saturday. The wall has been traveling the country for the last 10 years. It was purchased by Kaufman County with the help of the American Legion, VFW, the Marine Corps League and the citizens of Kaufman County. The 4/5ths scale replica of the Washington D.C. Memorial will go on permanent display at Kaufman County Veterans Memorial. Donations are still needed, visit Kaufman Herald for a complete story and details on how to help.

State Rep. Betty Brown spoke Saturday morning. This is her reflection in the Veterans Memorial at the Kaufman County Veterans Memorial Park. This is not the Vietnam Wall of Texas but one of the many monuments they have at the park.

Here is a better picture of Betty speaking. Who is that guy taking notes with a camera around his neck?

Last is a clip of Steve Doty, one of the partners who owned the wall reading a poem he wrote.

I have more photos of the crowd that I will share later in the week.

Terrell Tigers start the season 1-0

Friday night was the opening of the High School football season in Texas. Terrell played host to the RL Turner Lions from Carrollton. Terrell looked strong on both sides of the ball winning 20-0. The Tigers lost their starting quarterback midway through the first quarter but they were still able to score 3 times. Next week Terrell plays host to North Lamar from Paris, Texas.

Terrell scores their first touchdown

Terrell scores their second touchtown on a long run.

My football pictures didnt turn out that great. It's difficult to get good shots from the stands. Sunday I will post a few pictures of the bands.

Skywatch Friday-after the rain

This is right after a cloud burst we had last week. It lasted only about 15 minutes then the sky cleared and it was humid as heck.

To view other Skywatch Friday sites, visit here.

The correct answer to yesterdays post? Nobody go it right, but Kelly was sure on the right track.
Its not a veggie burger, not nutritional, not a buffalo burger and not whataburger.

Its a Deluxe Cheddar and bacon double Steakburger. Only at Steak n Shake.

This is only a test

This is one of my favorite burgers. Any guesses on what kind it is and where its from? There are a few hints in the pic.

The finalist have been named for the fried food contest for the State Fair of Texas. Have a look at the delicious foods that are in the running to be named tastiest fried food.

Then have a look at this clip, where the host takes a bite out of whipped cream dipped in liquid nitrogen.

From the side of the road

We have had a bit of rain over the last few weeks, but I don't think it was enough to save this corn field.

When corn gets like this does it have any value? I know corn has increased in value over the last few years, but it seems this happens every year. Do farmers get reimbursed if a crop fails because of weather?

I posted last week that at our City Council meeting they discussed the tax rate for the upcoming year. Our rate will remain the same. From Obstructed View, take a look at this City's tax problem. Glad I don't live there.

I wonder if the Cotton Gin restaurant is still in Crandall? They had the best food, but I haven't been in years.

Iris Theatre, Terrell, Texas, update

I got an update on the neon sign and a brief history lesson about the Iris Theatre.

Gayle, the owner of Books and Crannies sent me an email. The neon Iris sign will be lit up the night of September 1st. That is the 83rd anniversary of the opening of the theatre. She said the sign will be lit up every night at dark and turn off at midnight. M & M Lighting in Forney did the work and she said they were absolutely incredible to work with.

Davis Griffith-Cox also sent me an email about the theatre. He is the architectural restorationist and historian in charge of the project. The theatre was opened by owner, Leman Marshall on Sept.1, 1925. Its first feature was a movie staring Norma Tallmadge. Tickets cost 25 cents for adults. Its original neon colors of the sign are correct.

I cant wait until the 1st to see the sign turned on.

You will notice in the photo the sign has a request for anyone who may have pictures of the building prior to the 1960s. From what I can tell there may be other plans in the works for the facade. I am sure there will be more to come........

Some people live in a fantasy

Saturday was our Fantasy Football draft. It's a 12 team league that was initially a league for coworkers. This is probably the 10th or 11th year, and over the years the team owners have changed, people have moved on. Out of the 12 there are only 5 of us who work together. Below are 7 of the team owners who will be playing for second place, I already have first locked up. This was taken with my cell phone so its not great quality.

Starting lineup is 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 PK, 1 Def

Here are the 2008 Doormats
QB Matt Schaub
QB Vince Young
RB Joseph Addai
RB Jamal Lewis
RB LenDale White
RB Chris Perry
RB Jason Wright
RB Dominic Rhodes
WR Torry Hold
WR Laveranues Coles
WR Lee Evans
WR Reggie Williams
WR Bryant Johnson
TE Jason Whitten
PK Adam Vinatieri
PK Rob Bironas
Def Washington

You can go ahead and give me the trophy now.

Terrell Tigers scrimmage against Sulphur Springs

Friday night the Terrell Tigers hosted the Sulphur Springs Wildcats in a football scrimmage at Memorial Stadium. This served as a tune up before the first game of the season next week against RL Turner at Memorial Stadium in Terrell, game time is 7:30. The Terrell Tribune has a story about how the Tigers fared in the scrimmage. I have a few more pics I will put up tomorrow.

Skywatch Friday-storm brewin

The weather has been freaky the last few days, lots of rain. This is Wednesday night looking east down Moore Ave. You can see blue sky to the south, rain clouds to the north and huge puffy white clouds to the east.

Not quite blue skies, greens lights and smooth sailing.....but close.

Check out the rest of the Skywatch Friday sites here.

More work on Moore

Not all work in Moore Ave. is taking place at the Iris. Across the street, repairs have been underway for a while. Every Sunday someone is out hammering, sawing and painting.

Terrell City Council

How I spent my birthday:

Last night was the regular meeting of the Terrell City Council. I have been wanting to go for a while, but never could get home from work in time. Yesterday we left work a little early and I was able to make it to the meeting.

Pictured from left to right: Council Member Ricky Jordan, City Manager Torry Edwards (hidden behind a monitor), Mayor Hal Richards, City Attorney Mary Gayle Ramsey, Council Member Jack Jones (not that's not Dick Cheney), and Council Member Tommie Spencer. Not in the picture is Council Member Don Thurman and City Secretary John Rounsavall.

The meeting started at 7pm and was going strong at 9pm when they took a short break and I took my chance to head home. Public comments were heard at the start of the meeting. Two individuals spoke out about our local hospital and the prospects of it closing. There were maybe 10 hospital employees in attendance to show support for the hospital.

On the agenda last night were public hearings on the proposed tax rate for the upcoming year, the Fiscal Year 08-09 budget, water service rates, and a zoning change. I am guessing this would have been the chance for citizens to speak out for or against the items. I am not sure, because nobody spoke up. The Council did mention that the tax rate for the coming year remains the same with the same service (good job City Manager).

After the public hearing requests were taken for funding for groups for the next year. I think most items were tabled, to be sent to the City staff for review.

All in all, it was pretty neat. I learned a little about how our local government works, thought more people would show up and at times was bored to death.

If I could make one suggestion, get some WD-40 for that door. It squeaks a lot.

Back to school-Tax free weekend

This weekend shoppers in Texas enjoy a tax free weekend. It is away to help parents save on all footwear and clothing that costs less than $100. Locally Tanger Outlet will be having a scavenger hunt today at noon for kids. I got my pics this morning before the madness starts.

Ham's Orchard, Terrell, Texas

I think every blog in Terrell has had a write up and picture of Ham's Orchard. Its that good. This is the last weekend of the season. If you haven't made it out there yet, time is running out. Its more than just a peach orchard, you to visit their website to get an idea of everything they have. Personally I love the peach ice cream in a cake cone. The store is always packed, but they have excellent service, there is always someone close by to help.

Hi - this is a great article and photos. I found this as I am researching the graves in the picture. I am a cousin of Vincent Cockman who is one of the 20 young airman buried in Terrell. I live in the UK. As a small child I remember meeting his mother - who was my grandmother's aunt. I am in Dallas TX for a wedding in mid October and am planning on visiting the Oakland Memorial Park. If anyone can help me with directions to find Oakland from Dallas that would be very much appreciated. I also plan to visit the 1 BFTS museum in Terrell. My grandmother was his first cousin. Many thanks and congratulations on this great article.

Dont forget to check the link on the right for the Royal Air Force in Texas Fly In taking place in October.

Iris Theatre, Terrell, Texas

It's no secret I like this building. I have posted pictures of it here, here, here, here, and posted pictures of the bookstore here and here. The back of the bookstore even has a small theatre that the owners use to show old movies and put on plays.

One of the neat things about the building is the old neon Iris sign. I don't think I have ever seen it lit up but that's about to change. For the last week or so, workers have been busy painting, rewiring, and replacing. When they are done the Iris theatre sign will come alive again.

Gayle and Ron Harris who own Books and Crannies the store in the building have taken great care to try to preserve the building and keep the spirit of the Iris alive.

I can't wait to see the sign lit up, and I will be sure to post it here.

You can find more information on the history of the theater here.

If your looking for a book, give Books and Crannies a call. They just might have it. They also have brought in regional and national writers for book signings.

Look up

I think Petrea asked a while back who walks down the street and looks up? This window is just off of Moore Ave. I like the windows and the detail along the top of the building. Here is a picture of the front of the building that I look last year. Tomorrow, I will show you something above street level that has all of Terrell looking up.

High School football season

For High Schools that had a Spring practice, today is the first day of football practice for the upcoming year. Going to a high school football game is on my list of things to do this year. Last time I went to a high school football game was when I was in high school back in 1982. Terrell will hold a scrimmage with Sulphur Springs on August 22nd. The box office should be buzzing on August 29th, the night of the first home game against RL Turner. You can find the complete schedule here.

Skywatch runner up

I had two choices for my Skywatch Friday photo. This was the runner up. I love the look of the afternoon clouds the last few days. They look like big cotton balls and the sky is so blue behind them.

Going green

I thought we may get a little bit of rain last night from Tropical Storm Edouard. The sky got dark, the wind blew a little then it passed over, so no rain again. The heat did break a bit though. Laurie has two beautiful rainbows she took last night, so rain was close, but not close enough I guess.

This is about the only thing still in my yard that's green. Once it was clear it would stay dry last night I watered it down with a hand held hose.

This picture was taken in Glen Rose, TX. It sits outside of a store called The Junkyard Dog.

So hot you can fry an egg?

It was so hot yesterday I decided to see if I could fry an egg on the sidewalk. The high temperature in Terrell, Texas yesterday August 3rd was 106 F. In Dallas the high was 107. It's suppose to be the same today. A break may come tomorrow with the high only in the upper 90s.

I ventured outside just before 5PM at the hottest part of the day and set a skillet on the sidewalk. I cracked an egg in the skillet and waited for it to cook. To see what it looked like after an hour in the hot sun, click here.

We are under an excessive heat warning, up to 106 again today. I just saw on TV that skin can burn at 124 degrees and playground equipment can easily make it up to 150 when its this hot out.

Yesterdays post was only for humor, I was not trying to make any specific political statement.

Road Trip-Shreveport

I am having problems with blogger tonight. Just got back from a little gambling.
