Marine Corps League garage sale

The Marine Corps League of Terrell is holding a garage sale this morning on Moore Ave.

It's really not a garage sale, it's more like a rummage sale. Do people still use the term rummage sale? I hear yard sales, carport sales, patio sales, church sales, estate sales, but I don't remember hearing rummage sale in a long time.

The announcement in the Terrell Tribune says the funds raised will be used for veterans and their families. They will be there till 2pm.



Looks like its going to be a great day, time to find something fun to do.

Summertime buffet

The squirrels love the trees on our street. I wish they knew how to not make such a mess though. These are from the neighbors Bradford pear tree. Our pecan tress are doing well, but the squirrels like them also.

I know I am a geek, but I guess I am not a sci-fi Syfy geek. I never noticed they changed their name.

I guess I am a big enough geek to want to see GI Joe.

Here is a strange story with a Terrell, Texas tie.

I was digging through the boxes I dug out a week or so ago looking for something (I forget what) when I found a box full of cassette tapes from the 80s. Last night I was listening to Joan Armatrading, The Key, from 1983. I remember when I bought the tape. I was at Howard AB, Panama in the Air Force. I was 19 broke, working 12 hour days, 6 days a week (I think I walked to work up hill...both ways). I had my portable cassette player, earphones and my cassette tapes. Below is the video for the most popular song on the cassette.

Jamie Foxx to be honored in his hometown Terrell, Texas

The Terrell City Council meets twice a month, I go about once a quarter. There was a lot of information discussed at last nights meeting. You will have to pick up a copy of the Terrell Tribune for the details, I don't take notes. I was interested in seeing if anyone had any comments for the Council. Like I predicted yesterday, and as usual, nobody showed up to address the council on concerns, complaints or to just vent.



They did discuss the plans in place so far for the hometown celebration for Jamie Foxx on September 26th. Mr. Foxx will travel in a motorcade from Terrell City Hall, west on Moore Ave. to Memorial Stadium. Confirmed to be attending is Texas Governor Rick Perry, State Senator Bob Duell and State Representative Betty Brown. Terrell Mayor Hal Richards will present Mr. Foxx with a key to the city. This isn't a concert, this is the City's opportunity to thank Mr. Foxx for the years we have enjoyed watching him perform.

The event will be free but a ticket will be required. Ticket distribution will be announced soon. If you cant get a ticket, come down to Terrell anyway, line Moore Ave. for the motorcade, then enjoy lunch in one of Terrell's fine restaurants.

Besides being a super funny comedian, Mr. Foxx is an Academy Award winning actor for playing Ray Charles in "Ray", a multiple Grammy nominee and has sold millions of CD's.

One issue discussed at the meeting, that people seem to be having a problem with, is the cost of the event and how it's going to be paid for. The money spent will come entirely from the City's hotel/motel tax fund. The money in that fund can only be used for specific purposes, you can find the different ways the funds can be used here. Revenue raised from this tax can not be used for any other purpose.

That's not the only big news, but more about that later.

Paula Abdul is leaving American Idol. I think that's the final nail in the show for me. Nothing against the Kara who they brought in last year, but she is boring and takes herself to seriously. Some would say AI jumped the shark years ago. This may be the second trip over the shark.

Experimenting

I played around with one of my pictures from the Photo Walk. This is the Griffith home on 1st street. Built mid 19th century. I normally go for the straight point, shoot, upload and post. I like the way this turned out, maybe with some practice I could get good at.

Scott Kelby has a contest that just started. Shoot on the sidelines with Scott and Mike. The winner gets to roam the sidelines of a Florida State football game. It's a chance of a lifetime for one amateur sports photographer, I am not even good enough to be called an amateur. I will settle for the chance to take pictures of a Terrell Tiger game from the sidelines.

By now everyone has seen Jill and Kevin's big day. It has over 15 million hits on you tube. Check out this spoof, it's Jill and Kevin's last day, their divorce dance. The creators said its all made in fun.

September 26th Terrell, Texas will honor home town success Jamie Foxx. I will have more details tomorrow.

Terrell City Council meeting tonight at 7pm. Lets see how many people show up that are always complaining about something. Probably the same as usual-zero.

Dog Days of Summer

I really need to pay more attention to my surroundings. I remember these types of poles when I was a kid. They had the spikes in the sides so the workers could climb them. Now all the trucks have buckets or long ladders. I wonder how many of these kind of poles are left?





We went and saw The Collector on Saturday night. Not my type of movie.

The past two Sunday editions of the Terrell Tribune have contained coupons that more than covered the cost of the newspaper. Last week was a coupon for Shipley's Donuts, this week it was Denny's. If you don't read the Tribune try picking up a copy next Sunday and see whats new and what coupons you can use. If you haven't read it in a while, I am sure you will notice a difference. The cost is still only 50 cents.

The Dallas Morning News used to always advertise coupons in their Sunday paper that had a total value over $100 sometimes over $200. I would look at them each week and found nothing that would save me any money, or at least cover the cost of the paper. Now the cost of a Sunday DMN is $3.00. I quit buying the DMN a long time ago.

I hope to have news soon about another photo event in Terrell.

It's August, that means is my birthday month. I accept cash, money order, western union, pay pal......I am going to be 29....unless you want to pay me a dollar for every year, then I am closer to 100.

Theme day-Night

This theme day should have been easy for me. I love taking night shots. But put on the spot, it's hard to find something I like.

This is the First United Methodist Church in Terrell. I didn't notice when I was taking the picture, but you can see the lights from two jets that were crossing the sky. You may need to click on the picture for a larger view to see them.

Work

Have you ever started something, got sidetracked, got sidetracked again, then forget what you were doing to start with? That's they way I was last night.

I finally hooked my scanner back up. I promised a friend that I would scan some pictures from the 80s and send them to him. Once I got it hooked up, I had to find where I put the pictures.

While looking for the pictures I found some old football and hockey trading cards from the 70s. I started looking through the cards, remembering some and not finding all of them. Before I knew it I was digging for more cards. I know I have a Walter Payton rookie card somewhere. I did find a couple of Dick Butkus and a Randy White rookie card. I also have some old hockey cards from the 78-79 season.

While looking for more cards I saw some old VHS tapes that were not labeled. I wondered what could be on them. I pulled them out, there were 3 of them. Tape number 1 was all Big Brother 2 from the summer of 2001. Tape number 2 all Big Brother 5. Tape number 3 was all static, chances are good it was Big Brother.

I never did find the pictures I was looking for.

Oh, my picture for today is my messy cubicle at work. I took the photo on Monday, I don't remember why.



More rain coming morning, this line of storms looks bad. Terrell is on the right and the storms are moving from the left. The radar is from DallasNews.com. They just activated the weather sirens and the rain is starting. No time for visiting friends sites this morning.



Big Brother is on tonight. I think I just remembered where there are some more trading cards.........

Abandoned building

This is the old north campus of Medical Center at Terrell. The building is for sale and has been empty for a while. Is that a light on in the window? Answer at the bottom of the post.

August 1st is Monthly Theme Day in the City Daily Photo world. The theme is NIGHT, after sports, my favorite type of shot. I have been out after dark scouting spots for a good shot for the 1st. I liked this one, but its not Theme day material

I am close to picking a winner for the Terrell Photo Walk.

When I was growing up I listened to all types of music. Hall and Oates was a favorite of mine. I saw them in concert with ELO and I am not ashamed to admit they were great. Live From Daryl's House is Daryl Halls online music show, this month he brought Plain White T's to his farm. Give the Plain White T's a listen then check out the past shows.

I keep getting emails for free hotel rooms in Las Vegas........

Obstacles and objectives

When mowing some objects are easier to see than others.



The Kaufman Herald has a story up about the unveiling of the 4/5 th replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall that will take place on November 7th in Kaufman, Texas. I will make sure I am there. Last year, I posted photos on August 31 and September 8 of the delivery of the wall to Kaufman County on August 30th.

We got a little rain yesterday and had a nice rain shower this morning.

I am still trying to decide which photo to select to send on to the Worldwide Photo Walk contest.

I admit I am a Big Brother addict, I have watched every season and tried out 4 times. As a group, the house guests in BB11 are shaping up to be the meanest and nastiest of any year. I would fit right in that house.

I have also tried out 2 times for Survivor and once for Amazing Race. CBS TV11 is hosting an Amazing Race audition this Saturday in Lewisville, but I dont think I will be able to make it..........oh well, some day.......

With Fantasy Football season right around the corner, for my money, Footballguys.com is the best fantasy site around. The best football insider is Matt Mosley from ESPN.

Today's post screams geek, dork, nerd and that's not just because Mosley's name is mentioned.

About to expire

Do you ever look in your fridge and see something that's about to expire? You think, you're not really hungry, but hate to throw anything away.

That was my problem last night. I ended up baking at 10:00PM.

Yesterday was the Brickyard 400 at Indy. Maybe it's just me, but NASCAR is getting boring. I took an unplanned nap during yesterdays race.

The Terrell Tribune put out their annual Progress edition Sunday. If you can still get a copy, pick it up. I noticed a coupon in there for a donut shop that's worth more than cost of the paper. I am going to redeem mine as soon as the cinnamon rolls are gone.

The Rangers have games won 5 in a row. The leader of their division has won 7 in a row. Maybe that's what has Cliff down.

I am not a real Ranger fan. My baseball loyalties lie in St. Louis with the Cardinals, who seem to be making all the right moves. I hope they pay off.

Dr. L.E. Griffth home-Terrell Photowalk

For me one of the highlights of the Photowalk was to be able to walk the grounds of the Dr. L. E. Griffith home on 1st Street. Davis Griffith-Cox welcomed the photographers onto the grounds and answered any questions we had about his family or the home that was built in the mid 1800's.
