Dallas Mavericks

A few weeks ago I played a $5 scratch off from the Texas Lottery. One of the prizes was NBA merchandise from your favorite NBA Texas team, and I won merchandise prize pack. I went to the lottery office to claim my prize and last week it was delivered. I won a basketball, a hooded sweatshirt with the Mavs logo, uniforms patterned after the year the Mavs entered the league and this year, a wall clock and a team plaque. The plaque has all of the star players, including Jason Kidd. All of the prizes are pretty neat.

GO MAVS! MFFL

Terrell falls to Forney

The Terrell Tigers played the Forney Jackrabbits Friday night in what was finally their first home game of the season. Terrell lost to Forney 2-1, but they team played well. The photo is of the pitcher for Terrell getting ready to face a batter from Forney.

No nightmares on this Elm Street

This is Elm Street in Terrell. Not my street, but I like the look of it in Spring. Nice trees lining the street, sidewalks on both sides. Older homes on each side each with its own character. Looks like how I would imagine it to look in the 50s.

One more of the ladies

The Terrell High School Lady Tigers lost to Forney Tuesday night, but they did go down swinging. Forney has one of the best teams in Dallas area.

My new hard drive came in yesterday, so hopefully I will be back on my new computer tonight.

Internal hard disk drive not found

Last night I am checking out all of the Daily City Photo sites like I do every night, on my new just over a month old Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop, and I get to page I think 8 or 9 on the portal and my computer freezes. My mouse is still moving around but the its not doing anything, I cant toggle between windows, cant close anything out. I set there for a few minutes thinking its trying to open a page and got hung up. So after about 5 minutes the mouse quits moving, and the computer starts making a clicking sound. Not sure what’s going on, I shut down the computer without logging off because I can’t log off. When I go to restart it, internal hard disk drive not found. Now what? Well, I have my old computer, so I logged into Dell chat, and got a customer service rep who was very helpful, but it seems they are going to have to send me a new hard drive. He told me not to worry though, because this is a common problem, and oh by the way, you have lost everything you had on your computer. So until I get my new hard drive I am back to using my old computer and I feel like I am one of these cars stuck in traffic. BTW, the picture is from Saturday on Highway 80, there was a wreck that backed up traffic for miles. I wasn’t driving when I took the picture, I was the passenger.

Terrell Tiger sports

I have been trying for about a month to get to a Terrell Tiger baseball or softball game. It seems every time I go to the park or plan to go to the park, we get rain. There are two more chances this week, I hope it doesn't rain or get changed to the other teams field. Other than High School sports, Terrell doesn't really provide any opportunities to take great sports or action pictures like Chris in Nashville.

Terrell Chamber of Commerce

The webmaster for the Terrell Chamber of Commerce website thought a few of my pictures were good enough to use, and he has posted them here. Maybe you recognize them from here and here. I gave them permission to use whatever the think will help promote the City. If ever driving through Terrell be sure to stop and say HI.

The big top

This wasn't the plan for today's photo, but 3 inches of rain can change plans. Terrell didn't even get the bulk of the rain. There are a lot of areas in the Dallas area that got over 6 inches of rain. This is the main tent for the Carson & Barnes Circus. Its pretty huge.

Carson and Barnes Circus

The Carson & Barnes Circus came to Terrell yesterday to entertain kids and families with two shows. The weather was threatening, but it looks like it held off. There was a line waiting to get into into the big tent for the second show as spectators from the first show filed out.

It looked and sounded like everyone had a great time.

Behind the curtain

A theatre

Books & Crannies is located in the old Iris Theatre. The front of the building has been posted many times on this site. The theatre was built in in the mid 1920s and closed in 2001. I went to one movie there, Titanic. There are train tracks behind the theatre and when the train went past it would walk all over the sound. It still was neat to go to the movies in a real theatre and not a 30 plex. Even though most of the space is now the book store, they have an area in the back, behind the black curtain, that keeps the spirit of the Iris.

So, behind he curtain is a small theatre. There’s a seating area for about 30 people and room in front for kids.

They have a small screen set up and a 14 foot stage for plays. The Vagabond Players put on a play called Love Letters last month. I am not sure what or when the next production will be, but I remember seeing a notice on the marquee recently that they were having auditions.

To see what the theatre looked like years ago, check out this site.

I hope everyone has enjoyed getting a peek inside the bookstore and theatre. I really like that Gayle and her husband have kept the spirit of the Iris alive and have a thriving business. My next task will be to check to see if the have J. Andrews book.

Maddie and Books and Crannies

Maddie is Books & Crannies store cat. She is a hurricane Katrina survivor and was adopted from a Dallas animal shelter. She’s very beautiful and friendly.

You can see the large selections of books they have, my photo isn’t able to capture everything. If you are looking for a book, and don't know where else to look, give them a ring or send them an email. Their contact info is on their webpage.

There is a corner for the children.

You will have to come back tomorrow to find out what’s behind the curtain.

Books and Crannies herb fair

A few days ago I mentioned the sign at Books & Crannies said they would be having Herb fair today, and I wondered what it was. I took the opportunity to make my first visit to the bookstore today and found out what the herb fair was.

First off the store is really neat. I think they have every book every published. When I went in the store Gayle Harris who owns the store greeted me. She is very nice, she told me she has visited my website before, and she let me take whatever photos I wanted. So I will give you a few today and a few more tomorrow and maybe Monday.

Today’s pictures are of the herb fair.

The first picture is the ladies giving a demonstration on how to make dip from scratch making herbs. Gayle, the owner, is left of center in the gray shirt hugging the guy with the fuzzy mustache (her husband I hope). I didn’t notice when I was taking the picture, but it looks like the throw with Harry Potter on the back of the chair is trying to give a kiss on the cheek to the lady sitting there.

This is a wider shot of the front part of the store.

This is the lady that was preparing the dip. I wish I had gotten her name. Later in the day they were going to show how to make herb vinegar.

This is a shot from the front of the store looking towards the back. This was as the dip presentation was going on and me trying to stay out of the way.

Tomorrow I will give a better view of the book section of the store and Maddie the bookstore cat.

Terrell Lady Tigers

Last week I posted a few pictures of the guys soccer team. Tonight is the ladies turn. Terrell played their final home game of the year and lost to Forney 0-1. I am again practicing with the different types of pictures I can take.

Deformed tree?

Every other year or so, the electric company rumbles into town and trims back the trees, or through them. Its about time for them to make their appearance. Every time the show up, homeowners complain about the look of their trees after they are done. I am sure the people who live in the houses now did not plant the tree, but why plant a tree under power lines? That's something I see all over, not just in Terrell.

The reason its done is to protect the power lines from falling branches.

Do you still have overhead power lines in your neighborhood?

Davids Bail Bonds

A few months ago a bail bond shop opened up in Terrell. Not that big of a deal, but the County jail is about 15 miles from here. I never really paid attention to the building, but I noticed the painting on the door yesterday and wanted to snap a picture.

It says You Ring, We Spring

Slinger at Twin Cities Daily Photo has his 600th post up today. I can only hope to read that number some day.

I love the rain

It's going to be easy to find a picture for Aprils theme day, water. We have water all over the place. Nothing to complain about though, we need the lakes full for the start of summer. I love taking night time pictures when its wet out.

I have no idea what the Herb Festival is on the sign for Books & Crannies, I am going to find out.

Victory Plaza, Dallas, Texas

Standing on the balcony on the Platinum level of American Airlines Center gives a great view of Victory Plaza, a small part of the huge development called Victory Park. There are huge video screens on each side building that slide the length of the building. The center plaza was hosting Savor Dallas the night we were at the AAC. The color of the photo is from the video that was playing on the screens. It looks like a place I definitely want to go back and visit again.

A few more pictures from the football game are here.

Dallas Desperados Arena Football

Last night we were treated to tickets to the Dallas Desperados. They are an arena football team that play at American Airlines Center. Its the first time we have been to an arena football game. Its fun and fast with lots of scoring. In person is a lot better than on TV.

We got snow

We finally got snow in Terrell. This is a picture taken at about 5:30am looking out into my front yard. The ground isnt warm enough for anything to really stick, but it looks pretty right now. You can see one of our pecan trees in the picture. Any kids thinking they were getting out of school forget it. Classes will start on time. HA HA.

Terrell Texas High School soccer

The Terrell boys soccer team played a makeup soccer game last night against Red Oak, Texas High School. It was originally scheduled for Monday night but had to be moved because of the snow event we had, see yesterdays post. I wanted to go out and support the local team and see what kind of pictures I could get. Well the team fought hard, and my pictures were not what I was hoping for. I really would like a new camera (hint).

The Tigers are in the white tops, Red Oak the dark tops.

Texas blizzard 08

If you haven't watched the news lately, Texas had a primary yesterday. Thank goodness the blizzard is over......at least for now. We had a blizzard of candidates, media and TV commercials. It can get very exhausting. People at work who could care less about politics were talking about it like they talk about Cowboy football....and they don't know anything about football. So, thankfully the blizzard of Primary 08 is over. Maybe we can all get back to work. May ___________ (insert your candidate here) win.

Oh, we did have snow yesterday, it was also a major event. I almost had to call in to work.

Texas Primary Day

Today is primary day in Texas. If you haven’t already voted go out today and vote for the candidates of your choice. If you live in Texas, will you be going to a caucus tonight?

Yesterday I posted a flag from the Oak Grove Country Club. Jim, from Terrell High School Alumni blog posted a funny story from when he used to work at the country club growing up. If you haven’t read it, go back to yesterdays comments and get a good laugh.

Todays post is a flag just a little larger than yesterday. It’s located at the Heritage Buick Pontiac GMC dealership in Terrell. Heritage will be moving to Rockwall, Texas in just a few months so I am not sure what the future holds for the flag pole and flag. I hope that somehow it could remain at its current spot and be incorporated into whatever is built there. Maybe the owner of the dealership can give it to the city and it be moved to the City Park. Maybe I could write to the Mayor and ask that question?

I took the picture Sunday morning as a cold front was moving in. I like the way wind has caught it.

Oak Grove Country Club

Here is one of the greens at the local 9 hole golf course, Oak Grove Country Club. I was thinking when I took the picture, it looks like it could use some water. It has been pouring down here for the last few hours, so I guess it's getting its water. Needing water is a lot better than it being under 6 inches of snow. I like the small flag marking the hole. Check back tomorrow for a larger flag.

Renovation work continues

Work is progressing nicely on the building at the corner of Moore and Frances. This is how the building looks today. We are all still wondering what the building will be used for.

Below is a photo from November 1, 2007.

March 2008 Theme Day: Graffiti or street mural

I am recycling a photo from 2007 for this months theme day, Graffiti or street mural. Terrell has very little graffiti. The building pictured below is an old Coke bottling plant. In 2004 the windows were decorated to support the high school football team in the playoffs. Long after the football team was eliminated the writing stayed. It was still there in 2005, 2006 and 2007. The photo was taken July 3, 2007. I think after 3 years it can be called graffiti. Thankfully the windows have finally been cleaned and the building leased out to a local politician running for office.

There are over 140 sites participating in this months theme. Be sure to check out as many as you can.
