Monthly theme day-Metal and Skywatch Friday

This is my lame attempt to combine this months theme, metal, with Skywatch Friday. Last year we had a metal roof put on our house, this is the area above the dining room. The tree on the left is one of our pecan trees. It looks taller in the picture. It looked like rain last night, we got some thunder, we got some lightning, then we got nothing.

It is hot...in Texas...go figure

Yesterday was another day with the temperature at or over 100F. We did get rain in the morning, the amount recorded at the Terrell Municipal Airport was 0.01 inches. How is that for a downpour?


My picture today is of lily pads on Lake Tawakoni from last Saturday afternoon. I can look at this picture and just feel the heat I felt when standing on the rocks taking the picture.

British pilots at rest

19 RAF pilots died during air training in Terrell. They are buried at Oakland Memorial Park in Terrell.

The Royal Air Force in Texas Fly-in

I want to thank everyone for the nice comments over the last few days. Seeing off the soldiers means a lot. The City promised to be back out there when they return, and I will be there too.

Instead of posting a picture today, I am putting up a poster and a link on my sidebar.

One of the unique things about Terrell is the #1 British Flying Training School Museum. During WWII Terrell hosted one of six British Flying Training Schools. Thousands of British and American aviators learned how to fly in Terrell.

In February, I toured the Museum and posted a few pictures. This October, #1 BFTS Museum will host The Royal Air Force in Texas Fly-in. The fly-in will be a two day event that will bring veterans of the school back to Terrell for a reunion and an opportunity for the citizens of Terrell to learn about the museum and Terrells role in WWII. Go ahead and mark October 17th and 18th on your calendar, save your dollars and pounds and join us in Terrell.

Today is Deployment day

This morning is deployment day for the Texas Army National Guard. I said yesterday that the troops will be training for a month, then off to Iraq. The training is going to be for 3 months, then off to Iraq. People have been asked to line the streets to show support for the men and women heading off to train, and then to Iraq. Unfortunately, I have to work or I would be out there with everyone else. I said in a post about a month ago that CBS Channel 11 was my favorite local TV station. Here is Channel 11 reporter Bud Gilletts report from Saturday. I posted a few more pictures on More Terrell Photos.

Mustang Warriors Foxtrot 949

A deployment ceremony was held this morning at Ben Gill Park for the departing soldiers of the Texas Army National Guard, 56th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 949th Brigade Support Battalion, Company F Field Support Company. The men and women of Company F will be leaving Monday morning for a month of training before heading off to Iraq.

To show support for the soldiers before heading out, Terrell Chamber of Commerce treated the soldiers and family to a day of ceremony and fun. Below is the Company marching from the Guard Headquarters to the Pavilion. More pictures to come.

Skywatch Friday-Gas Well

Oil was king in Texas for years. The last few years have seen another energy boom, this time natural gas. North Texas is home to the Barnett Shale, one of the largest onshore natural gas fields in the U.S. Todays Skywatch Friday picture is one of the many gas wells sprouting up in the North Texas area, this one taken in Johnson County.

Road Trip-Paluxy River, Glen Rose, Texas the end

Last day for the Paluxy River pics. I posted a few more over on my second page.

Brian also has been posting pictures from the town square of Glen Rose and the Paluxy River. Be sure to check out his pictures of the County Courthouse and square. We both took the road trip. When we got to the Paluxy River, he went one direction and I went the other. Did I mention it was HOT!

No he is not. The river bed is only about 6 inches deep where this guy it at.

Tomorrow, for better or worse, we jump back into the 21st century for Sky Watch Friday.

Dinosaur tracks, Glen Rose, Tx

These are the dinosaur tracks I have been teasing all week. They are actually theropoda tracks. The easiest way to describe what they looked like its they were small versions of the T-Rex. The river bed is full of tracks, but they don't make great pictures. Dinosaur Vally State Park is about 100 miles from Terrell.








Yes, these are real. They are now part of the limestone rock.

Road Trip-Paluxy River, Glen Rose, Texas II

Another photo from the road trip that Brian and I took to Dinosaur Valley State Park. This is looking the other direction on the Paluxy river. There was really no current, so I don't know whats up river or down river. If I had to guess this would be up river. The limestone formations are something I have never seen before, just brilliant looking. I loved climbing around on the rocks and seeing the dinosaur tracks. More to come.

Road Trip-Paluxy River, Glen Rose, Texas

Yesterdays road trip was to Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose, Texas. Glen Rose is famous for the Dinosaur tracks in the Paluxy river bed. By the looks of the crowd its also famous for the swimming. I will show the tracks later in the week.

Summer time

What better way to spend a summer evening than in the park watching a softball game. I think these people were waiting for their game to start.

Terrell Heritage Society Museum

The Terrell Heritage Museum reflected in the windows of the Terrell Post Office. Sometime next year ground breaking is suppose to take place to replace the Post Office. The Museum is the building is my header photo. I have been thinking of changing it to something else. Its been up there since I started my site June 2, 2007. Any ideas? I may choose 5 photos and put up a poll to let readers decide. But I hate change, I do not like it when someone moves my cheese.

Artificial rain

Water sprinklers are becoming a familiar site in Terrell. Summer in Texas always brings dry weather and high temperatures. This is up the street from my house. I wanted to take off my shoes and socks and go run through it.

City of Terrell, Texas

In March I posted about having pictures of mine posted on the Terrell Chamber of Commerce website. Friday I got an email from the webmaster that he has posted a few of my shots on the City of Terrell's website. All of the pictures they used link back to my site and are tagged with my website name. Todays picture is of the City of Terrell's City Hall and Police Station that I posted back in August before I joined CDP, they share a small building and could use something new. This is one of the photos they used. I added a link to the City website to the sidebar.

Cowgirls?

Is that a proper name now days, cowgirls? Should it be cowladies? That doesn't sound right, I might get walloped if I call'em that. The men are not the only ones taking part in the calf roping. There are a couple of ladies that also rope. Just as good as the men. Calf roping is every Thursday night at Wade Indoor Arena. I saw a sign that Monday nights in July is saddle roping. Not sure what that is, but I think I need to find out.
