#2

I remember when I saw this sign, I could feel my stomach drop. I was hoping it wasn't bad news, but I had a idea I knew what it meant.

I am not sure why I am including this in my favorite pictures, its certainly not my favorite. I didn't know Spc. Jonathan Emard. I didn't know his family.

Maybe it's the sacrifice he made for people he didn't know, so they could live free and try to live a peaceful life. Maybe it was the way the town came together to honor his life and service. Maybe it's the hope that we don't have to do this again.

I can't imagine what his family went through this year. But, I am sure JD Emard is in a better place. I hope everyone has a safe New Years Eve, and takes the time to remember the people who are no longer here.

If you have a few minutes, please take the time to view the you tube slide shows created by others. The song in the first slide show is also at the bottom of my page. If Heaven Was Needing A Hero. I never heard the song until I listened to it on the you tube clip.

Favorite photo of 2008, #3, Dark Alley

This was first posted November 19th. I guess this is one that I would call artsy. Not much to it, but I like the look of it.

I mentioned yesterday I have a new camera. Its a Samsung NV24HD. This picture was taken with the new camera.

Favorite photo of 2008, #4, Fourth of July fireworks

This was originally posted on July 6th. It was taken during the annual 4th of July fireworks in Ben Gill Park.

This was the last photo of four pictures that I took starting with the the sunset and ending with this one, when the fireworks started.

I wonder what the fireworks will look like with my new camera? You will have to stick around until July to find out.
Click on the fireworks label below for all of the 4th of July pictures.

For Dallas Cowboys fans, I wanted to repost this picture.

Favorite photo of 2008, #5, Mustang Warriors

January 1st is theme day at CityDailyPhoto. The theme for January is Best Photo of the Year 2008. I am changing it slightly to my favorite photo of 2008. My best photo is just an average photo to someone else. As I narrowed my choices down to a small group, I noticed that my favorites are either military, sports or night time related. I guess that means I suck at taking daytime shots. It's hard to pick just one picture so I am going to post 5 photos starting today with #5.

This picture was first posted on July 26th.

Here is the text provided with the photo on that day.

A deployment ceremony was held this morning at Ben Gill Park for the departing soldiers of the Texas Army National Guard, 56th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 949th Brigade Support Battalion, Company F Field Support Company. The men and women of Company F will be leaving Monday morning for a month of training before heading off to Iraq.

To show support for the soldiers before heading out, Terrell Chamber of Commerce treated the soldiers and family to a day of ceremony and fun. Below is the Company marching from the Guard Headquarters to the Pavilion. More pictures to come.

Today, Company F is in Iraq (pdf). We can't say thank you enough to the men and women who volunteer to serve their country. I served in the USAF from 82-88, during the quieter times.

The troops are suppose to come home sometime in 2009. City leaders promised another ceremony to welcome them home. I will be there with my camera.

For more photos of the Deployment Ceremony type in 'Texas Army National Guard' in the blog search bar or click on Texas Army National Guard listed under label.

Birds II

I hope everyone had a great Christmas. I was without my internet for the past few days, so I haven't been able to visit anyone. I promise to try to catch up this weekend, as long as the birds don't carry me away.

Skywatch Friday-cloud break

To me this just says cold......because it was. The sky was covered in clouds except for a strip where it looked like someone took their finger and ran it across the sky.

Lights

It seems that there are not as many houses decorated for Christmas this year. This one is an annual favorite and didn't disappoint this year.

Last night before the Cowboys game I had the wonderful opportunity to go shopping at the Tanger Outlet Mall in Terrell and Kohls in Rockwall.

I hate shopping.

Sabrina loves her some Cowboys

Tonight is the last game in Texas Stadium for the Dallas Cowboys. Next year they move into a new stadium in Arlington, Texas. Tonight's game is a really big deal to some.

Meet Sabrina, she sits across the aisle from me at work. Can you tell who she roots for? She has a big Cowboys balloon that she fills up with helium and displays it above her desk when they win. She decorated her cube with blue Christmas lights, sorry blue Cowboy lights. Her cube is everything Cowboys. She has to be the #1 Dallas Cowboy fan. Of course, I am the #1 fan of who ever is playing the Cowboys. Tonight its GO RAVENS.

Maybe I will call her tonight during the game to see if she answers.

Skywatch Friday-the birds

We haven't had much of a sky this week. The weather has not been very good. So, not so much a sky watch photo, as a photo of birds trying to get out of town before our latest cold spell. Ignore the reflection of the dash. I had to get this quickly from the car.

What do you do when you get up and find ice on everything? Get in the car take a picture of the ice on the windshield, then go back inside and call in to work. I also think I may be coming down with something.

Herman Furlough Jr. Invitational

This weekend Terrell hosts the Herman Furlough Jr. Invitational basketball tournament. Yesterday I took in the Dallas Carter vs. Dallas Thomas Jefferson game. Carter is one of the better 4A teams in the area and it showed in this contest winning 111-39. Carter is in red, Jefferson in white.

Matchups for this afternoon and tonight can be found here. Come out to Terrell and watch some good basketball.

TFD vs. TPS

Click on each picture for a larger version, and check out the youtube link to the right for short clips of the game. I was playing with the settings on my camera so these didn't turn out as nice as I would have liked.

Terrell Fire Dept vs. Terrell Police Services

Saturday morning the Terrell Fire Department took on the Terrell Police Services in their annual friendly flag football game. Admission to the game was an unwrapped toy for K-Toys for Kids. The Fire Department's team is in the red running over the TPS. I will have a couple more tomorrow. I added a few video clips of the game, check the youtube link on the right. More information about K-Toys for Kids can be found here.

Moon, Venus, Jupiter

As we were driving home Saturday night we noticed the bright stars in the sky close to the moon. I remembered reading about the Moon, Venus and Jupiter all being close together and it making for a great looking night sky. When I got home I looked it up to make sure. Last night and tonight were going to be the best nights for viewing. Last night was cloudy, so tonight was my only chance to try to get a picture. Thankfully it was a clear sky. Here is my photo of the night sky. The next time they will be this close is in 2052.

Here are a few other Daily Photo sites with their view of the same sight from different parts of the world. I will add any other sites that I find on the CPD portal.
